Q1. How Often Should I Oil My Hair?
As a dermatologist, I recommend oiling your hair once or twice-a-week, depending on your hair-type and individual needs. Fine or oily hair may benefit from once-a-week oiling, while dry or coarse hair might require twice a week. Excessive oiling can lead to greasiness and weigh down your hair, making it look dull and lifeless. It is crucial to assess how your hair responds to oiling and adjust the frequency accordingly.
Q2. When Should I Oil My Hair?
The best time to oil your hair is typically 1-2 hours before you plan to wash it. This time frame allows the oil to effectively penetrate the hair shaft and provide deep nourishment. Additionally, oiling your hair before bedtime can be advantageous, but ensure that the oil is applied to the hair strands and not the scalp to avoid any potential scalp issues.
Q3. How Long Is Too Long To Leave Oil In Hair?
Leaving oil in your hair for an extended period can lead to a buildup of oil and product residue, making your hair appear greasy and weighed down. As a general guideline, it is advisable to leave the oil only on your hair strands for a maximum of 6 to 8 hours. This time frame allows the oil to adequately moisturise your hair without causing excessive greasiness.
Q4. Can I Sleep With Oil In My Hair?
Yes, sleeping with oil in your hair can be beneficial, especially if you have dry or damaged hair. However, it's important to protect your pillowcase by covering it with a towel or using a silk/satin pillowcase to prevent oil stains. Additionally, tying your hair in a loose braid or bun can help minimise oil transfer and keep your hair more manageable while you sleep.

Q5. How Do You Wash Your Hair After Oiling It?
To wash your hair after oiling, start by wetting your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water. Apply a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo to your scalp and work it into a lather, focusing on massaging the scalp to remove excess oil and dirt. Rinse your hair thoroughly and repeat the shampooing process if necessary. Follow up with a moisturising conditioner, focusing on your hair ends, and rinse it out completely. It's important to use a gentle touch while washing your hair to avoid tangling or damaging it.
Q6. What Hair Oils Help Hair Growth?
There are several hair oils that are believed to promote hair growth, including Rosemary oil, Castor oil, Argan oil, Jojoba oil. These oils are rich in nutrients, antioxidants, and fatty acids that can nourish the hair follicles, improve scalp health, and stimulate hair growth. However, it's important to note that individual results may vary, and hair growth is influenced by various factors, including genetics and overall hair care practices.
Q7. Should I Oil My Hair Before Bed Or In The Morning?
Whether you choose to oil your hair before bed or in the morning depends on personal preference and convenience. Oiling your hair strands before bed allows the oil to work its magic overnight and provides a longer duration for deep conditioning . On the other hand, some individuals prefer oiling their hair in the morning to benefit from the added shine and manageability throughout the day. Ultimately, it's important to find a routine that fits well.
