5 Ways Workplace Harassment Affects Your Self-Worth and Mental Health

We often talk about the work culture and workplace harassment, but for many, it has become a source of deep emotional pain, leading to doubt about their self-worth. When a professional environment turns toxic, it doesn't just stay at the office; it follows you home, affecting your sleep, your health, and even how you see yourself in the mirror.

Workplace harassment is a silent epidemic that leaves many employees questioning their own value. However, by understanding the psychological impact of this harassment, anyone can reclaim their identity. To have a better understanding of this issue, the editorial team of OnlyMyHealth spoke to Mr S Giriprasad, Psychologist at Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru. Continue reading to know what he shared with us.

What Exactly Is Workplace Harassment?

It is vital to recognise that workplace harassment isn't always a loud, visible confrontation. It is often a pattern of behaviour designed to undermine a person.

Speaking about the same, Mr Giriprasad explains, "Workplace harassment includes any repeated behaviour, verbal, physical, psychological, or digital, that creates a hostile, intimidating, humiliating, or unsafe work environment.

He further mentions that it can take the form of bullying, public shaming, inappropriate jokes, discriminatory remarks, sexual advances, exclusion from important meetings, constant micromanagement, or unfair targeting.

"It encompasses indirect methods like gaslighting, credibility destruction, and rumour spreading," he notes.

Ways Workplace Harassment Affects

Explaining ways how long-term harassment destroys self-worth, Mr Giriprasad shares:

  1. The extended duration of harassment leads to a gradual destruction of a person's self-confidence, resulting in the loss of their personal identity.
  2. Employees who face constant criticism and belittling treatment will start to develop negative beliefs about their work abilities and their worth as individuals. They start to doubt their choices and feel unworthy of the chances they receive.
  3. In a toxic office, the environment becomes a danger zone for the brain. This creates a permanent feeling of inadequacy, where psychological stress transforms how you see yourself, making you doubt both your job skills and your basic human value.
  4. The body experiences increased stress through elevated levels of cortisol and adrenaline, resulting in sleep disruptions, reduced immunity, and heightened bodily inflammation, which eventually disturb your overall creativity and productivity, further diminishing your image in the office.
  5. Facing this harassment for a long time can lead to actual health problems, including high blood pressure, gastrointestinal disorders, and perpetual exhaustion. Mentally, this can develop into anxiety disorders, depression, panic attacks, or symptoms that resemble Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Find Joy Elsewhere: Participate in activities outside of work that help you build skills and protect your identity from fading away.

Bottomline

No job is worth the cost of your mental health and identity. While workplace harassment can make you feel small and unworthy, it is important to remember that the toxicity of your environment is a reflection of the workplace, not your competence. Your value as a person remains unchanged, regardless of how a toxic colleague might treat you.
