While walking and running are some of the best and easiest cardio activities, for those who are adventurous, trekking can be a good option. It not only holds several physical benefits but can also aid your mental health. In an interaction with the OnlyMyHealth team, Shreekant Dhumale, an experienced Mountaineer and Founder of Sagarmatha Adventures, discusses the various health benefits of trekking.

What’s So Good About Trekking?

Trekking is a journey of the body and the mind, says Dhumale, adding that it is a physical challenge that can help us to build strength, endurance, and resilience. But according to him, it is also a mental challenge that can help us overcome our fears, step outside of our comfort zones, and to see the world in a new way.

“In a world that is increasingly fast-paced and stressful, trekking can be a way to slow down, to connect with nature, and to find peace and tranquillity. It can also be a way to challenge ourselves, to grow, and to learn more about ourselves,” he adds. 

That said, trekking is a challenging but rewarding activity that can help you to become stronger, both physically and mentally.

Physical Benefits Of Trekking

The physical benefits of trekking are well-known. These include:

Improved cardiovascular health

Trekking involves long hours of vigorous climbing and walking in nature, which is said to be a great cardiovascular exercise form. As we know, certain lifestyle diseases and heart-related problems can result from inactivity, an adventure activity like trekking can improve heart health. According to a study published in the Journal of Exercise Rehabilitation, trekking is effective in reducing body weight, improving cardiovascular health, and fitness. 

Increased muscle strength and endurance

Trekking requires climbing uphill and maintaining body balance and stability while walking downhill. Having said that, it can help tone and strengthen the muscles in the lower body, especially the legs, and also enhance their flexibility. 

Reduced risk of obesity and related health issues

Trekking involves a lot of walking, which is proven to improve cardiovascular health and benefit individuals with obesity. A study published in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science claimed that walking utilises 90% of all muscles, strengthens the muscles and increases the stability of the upper segment of the spine, suggesting that walking significantly reduces body weight.

Mental Benefits Of Trekking

As per Dhumale, it is as important to recognise the mental benefits of trekking. He says, “Trekking can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. It can also help to improve our self-esteem, our sense of accomplishment, and our overall well-being.”

In fact, in a 2020 study published in the International Journal of Indian Psychology, researchers found that individuals with beginner and intermediate levels of trekking experience showcased reduced levels of stress immediately after trekking compared to responses collected on the scale before and a week after trekking. 

In addition, scores of experienced trekking individuals remained constant on the Perceived stress scale across three trials. The study concluded that experienced trekking experts are better equipped to handle stress compared to trekking individuals of beginner or intermediate levels of experience.
