We have heard our entire lives how important it is to work out. It keeps you fit, your weight in check and is crucial for your overall health and well-being. As one ages, the ability to work out gradually decreases. There is less movement that can have an impact on health. Being physically active during old age is said to be good for the body. Apart from a dip in physical prowess, cognitive abilities are also affected as one age. Now, a recent study has shown that being physically active in old age can protect a person’s brain health.
What Did The Research Say?
The study was undertaken by researchers at the University of Georgia.
- The study involved 51 older adults. Their physical activity and fitness measurements were tracked.
- They wore devices that tracked the intensity of exercise, the number of steps they walked, and the distance covered.
- The participants’ fitness level was tracked based on a six-minute walking test. During this test, they walked as quickly as possible and covered as much distance as they could.
- Through various tests and MRI scanning, the participant’s cognitive functioning was measured.

Here is what the study found:
- Physical activity during old age helps protect cognitive functions. Not just that, it need not be an intense activity for your brain to function well.
- Marissa Gogniat, the lead author of the study, said that we are told our entire life that it’s good to exercise. However, the study shows that physical activity can even “change your brain”. It, in turn, plays a big role in determining how well you function in your day-to-day life.
- The study also highlighted that you do not need to run marathons in your old age to protect your brain. Even a light or moderate-intensity workout can be beneficial. It can be as simple as moving around more, walking more steps, and covering a longer distance.
The study was published in the journal 'Sport Sciences for Health'.
