Phil Robertson’s Battle With Alzheimer’s Disease

— Jase Robertson (@JaseDuckman) May 26, 2025

In December 2024, Phil’s son Jase Robertson shared on the family’s podcast that Phil had been diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. It is a brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills. Over time, it makes it hard for people to do even simple tasks. As the months went by, Phil’s health got worse. The family focused on making him comfortable and spending as much time with him as possible. Jase said, “We’re doing the best we can. I think that’s just what you do.” The Robertson family was open about Phil’s health struggles, hoping to help others who might be going through something similar.1 - 2025-05-26T104331.758

It affects millions of people worldwide. It is the most common cause of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other thinking problems. According to a study published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia, early diagnosis and support can help families better manage the disease and improve quality of life. The study found that people with strong family support tend to have a slower decline in memory and daily skills.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Dementia is an umbrella term for several diseases affecting memory, other cognitive abilities and behaviour that interfere significantly with a person’s ability to maintain their activities of daily living. Although age is the strongest known risk factor for dementia, it is not a normal part of ageing. Dementia is one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people worldwide.

Dr Mahendra JV, HOD and Consultant-Department of Neurology, Ramaiah Institute of Neurosciences, Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, Bengaluru, explains that family history is a well-known risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. “Individuals with a first-degree relative (parent, sibling) diagnosed with Alzheimer's are more likely to get the illness than those without such a family history,” he said. If more than one family member is impacted, the risk is much higher.

Alzheimer’s Warning Signs

According to Dr Kailas Mirche, Neurologist, Citizens Speciality Hospital, Hyderabad, below are a few early symptoms that one needs to notice:

  • Forgetting things that just happened: Like missing appointments or asking the same question over and over.
  • Getting confused about time or place: Sometimes getting lost, even in places they know well.
  • Mood changes: Suddenly feeling angry, scared, or sad for no clear reason.
  • Having trouble with words: Finding it hard to follow or join in conversations.
  • Making poor decisions: For example, not handling money well or forgetting to take care of themselves.

Conclusion

Phil Robertson’s journey reminds us of the importance of family, faith, and perseverance in the face of life’s challenges. His openness about his Alzheimer’s diagnosis helped raise awareness about the disease and encouraged others to seek support. As the world remembers Phil, his legacy will continue to inspire kindness, resilience, and hope in the hearts of many.
