What Causes Cysts In The Ovaries?3 - 2025-05-22T153657.383

Most cysts develop as part of the normal menstrual cycle. Each month, the ovaries release an egg. Sometimes, the follicle holding the egg doesn’t open or close properly, causing a cyst. Dr Anjana Singh, Director and Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Fortis Hospital, Noida, explains that there are several types of cysts in the ovaries.

  • Dermoid cysts and endometrioma cysts: These are less common and can contain different types of tissue or blood.
  • Benign cysts: Often caused by hormonal imbalances, especially if there’s an imbalance in LH or FSH hormones.
  • Follicular cysts: These form when a follicle doesn’t rupture during the menstrual cycle and instead becomes a cyst.
  • Malignant (cancerous) cysts: These are rare and linked to ovarian cancer.

Symptoms and Diagnosis2 - 2025-05-22T153655.000

According to Dr Anjana, ovarian cysts can cause:

  • Pain in the lower abdomen
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Pain during sex
  • Painful bowel movements (especially with endometriotic cysts)
  • Pelvic pain and bloating
  • Large cysts can even lead to infertility

Diagnosis is usually done with a hormonal blood test and an ultrasound to check if the cyst is solid or benign. Sometimes, a CT scan or MRI is needed for a clearer picture. Your doctor will decide on the best treatment plan based on the type and size of the cyst.

Treatment Options

In some cases, doctors may monitor small cysts with regular ultrasounds to see if they change in size. The expert says treatment depends on the cause:

  • Benign cysts: Often treated with hormone therapy to correct imbalances.
  • Endometriotic or bleeding cysts: May need surgery to remove the cyst.
  • Malignant cysts: Require more extensive surgery and cancer treatment.
