Overcoming Social Isolation: Expert Explains Power Of Connections For Mental Well-Being

Social isolation has become an increasingly prevalent concern in today’s fast-paced, digitally-driven world. Despite being surrounded by friends and social media followers, many individuals find themselves feeling disconnected and emotionally isolated. This feeling of loneliness knows no bounds of age, gender, or cultural affiliation, affecting individuals from various walks of life. We spoke to Dr Neerja Aggarwal, PhD Psychologist, Emoneeds, who explained the importance of social connection and how to maintain it.

The Importance of Connection

Dr Aggarwal said, “Humans are naturally social creatures, biologically predisposed to seek connections and engage in interactions. When individuals experience social isolation, which entails a lack of meaningful social engagement, it can profoundly affect mental health and increase their susceptibility to various psychological issues, such as depression and cognitive decline. To counteract these effects, individuals need to actively initiate measures to cultivate meaningful connections.”

The International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health published a study in May 2022 that delved into data from India’s inaugural Longitudinal Ageing Study. The findings revealed that slightly over a fifth (20.5%) of Indian adults aged 45 and older acknowledged grappling with moderate loneliness, while 13.3% disclosed experiencing a more profound and severe sense of loneliness.

Nurturing Existing Relationships

Dr Aggarwal informed, “One potent approach to overcoming loneliness is to nurture existing relationships. Consistent communication with friends and family members through phone calls, video chats, or traditional letters can cultivate a sense of belonging and emotional support.” Engaging in shared activities like virtual game nights, book clubs, or online fitness classes, can help bridge the gap between physical separation and emotional closeness.

Pursuing New Connections

Actively pursuing fresh connections is essential in the battle against social isolation. Engaging in social or hobby groups, taking part in community events, or dedicating time to volunteer for a cause can open doors to encountering people who share similar interests. The digital age provides a plethora of platforms and forums that enable individuals to connect regardless of geographical barriers, uniting them through common passions.

Maintaining a Healthy Balance

Dr Aggarwal emphasised, “Striking a harmonious equilibrium between interactions in the digital realm and those in the physical world is of utmost importance. While social media can offer a semblance of connection, it remains crucial to complement virtual engagement with tangible, real-life interactions. In instances where it is secure and practical, face-to-face encounters contribute to a deeper sense of connection and play a role in diminishing the likelihood of experiencing detachment.”

Enhancing Communication Skills

Developing strong communication skills is another crucial aspect of overcoming social isolation. Effective communication entails active listening, empathy, and open dialogue. By honing these skills, individuals can establish meaningful relationships and create an environment where they feel understood and valued.

Prioritising Self-Care

Dr Aggarwal added, “Giving paramount importance to self-care assumes a critical function in enhancing mental wellness and tackling social isolation. Engaging in activities that elicit joy and relaxation, like mindfulness practices, pursuing personal hobbies, or immersing oneself in natural surroundings can foster a profound sense of contentment and joy.” This prioritisation of self-care not only elevates an individual’s mental health but also equips them to authentically connect and engage with others in their relationships.

Seeking Expert Guidance

Dr Aggarwal concluded, “Taking a step further, it’s important to recognise that seeking help from mental health experts is a sign of strength, not weakness. Breaking the taboo surrounding mental health and therapy can have a transformative impact. Consulting with a trained professional can provide valuable guidance and tools to navigate the challenges of social isolation, fostering a greater understanding of oneself and facilitating the journey towards improved mental well-being.”
