As summers are approaching, you might have witnessed one phenomenon – the reappearance of mosquitoes. In India, this insect is commonly seen in summers and monsoons. At its least, mosquito bites can cause itchiness and small bumps on the skin. However, these are the same insects that are carriers of serious illnesses such as malaria, dengue, and zika. As per a 2015 study done in Ethiopia, neem oil is about 70% effective against mosquitoes for around three hours. However, you must consult a dermatologist beforehand as this oil can cause some skin irritation.

3. Tea Tree Oil

4. Soybean Oil

Who knew the defense against mosquitoes lies right on your kitchen cabinet? Not oil itself, but soybean oil-based products are considered effective against mosquitoes, as per the University of Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory.

5. Lavender

This sweet-smelling flower known for its stress-relieving and soothing properties can also help against mosquitoes. A 2002 study done on mice found it effective for the same. You can either apply lavender oil bought from the market. Or, you can go the natural way by growing the flower and extracting its oil by yourself.

During summers and monsoons or while going to an area where there is an outbreak of mosquito-borne diseases, wear full clothing. Keep yourself fully covered to protect against mosquito bites. Also, switching on the fan is another thing you can do. Mosquitoes breed in places where there is stagnant water. These places give a way to mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria. Hence, make sure all your nearby areas are clear of stagnant water. By doing these, you can surely keep the mosquitoes at bay.
