Drinking water is probably the easiest activity out there. There is hardly any room for mistakes. At least, that is what we thought. In one of his latest videos on YouTube, Dr. Eric Berg, who has over 6.8 million subscribers on the platform, spoke about six common mistakes you can make while drinking water. Going through his video, it is safe to say that most of us have committed these mistakes at some point in our lives. From quantity to pace, he touched upon various elements of drinking water. Let us look at six such mistakes one by one.

We all have heard people recommending gallons of water as the key to good health and beautiful skin. Although two to three litres of water in a day is recommended, anything more than that can have detrimental effects. One such effect is when you force yourself to drink a lot of water, it dilutes electrolytes, especially salt, in your body. It can even lead to a condition called hyponatremia, which is characterized by an extremely low sodium level. It’s a serious condition that has even proved to be fatal in some cases. Hence, drink the right amount of water. Also, take into account external factors, like sweating and exercising, in which cases you will need extra water. Thirst is an excellent sensation that can help you determine the amount of water you need.

Mistake 2: Drinking Water Too Quickly

It’s not a major issue. But, drinking water too quickly in some cases doesn’t allow the sodium in your blood to balance that extra fluid. Hence, it can lead to electrolyte imbalance, which can even lead to swelling in some cases.

Often, we drink such fluids thinking they have a hydrating effect, but they prove to be otherwise. Such “wrong fluids” include tea, coffee, alcohol, and soda. Far from hydration, these have a diuretic effect, which means they push fluid out of your body. Hence, pick your fluids wisely.

Mistake 4: Drinking While Eating

We all have been advised at some point in our lives to not drink water in between meals. Yes, it kills your appetite, but it has harmful effects, too. Water dilutes your gastric juices, which makes them difficult to digest, especially proteins. Not just that, you might even end up with acid reflux and even GERD. If you are thirsty, sip some amount of water in between meals. Otherwise, restrict it to 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after you have had your meals.

Mistake 5: Drinking Cold Water

During scorching summers, it’s common to just open the refrigerator and gulp down iced cold water. Although it might feel good, it can damage your vagus nerve, which is the longest nerve of the autonomic immune system.

Mistake 6: Drinking Tap Water

Out of desperation, at times we might have to resort to tap water. It is an unsafe thing to do as tap water is filled with harmful toxins such as chlorine and fluoride that can harm you. Also, in several places in India, groundwater is laced with arsenic that can be carcinogenic.

Hence, next time you drink water, do not do it mindlessly. Take note and ensure that you do not make the above-mentioned mistakes.
