Study On Mediterranean Diet And Oral Health

The new study, published in the Journal of Periodontology, highlights how diet influences oral inflammation and long-term dental health. The study titled Relationship between Mediterranean diet and periodontal inflammation in a UK population: A cross-sectional study carried out by researchers from King’s College London.

The research was conducted on nearly 200 participants. It revealed that those who consume red meat often are more likely to develop serious gum diseases. On the other hand, those who were on a plant-rich Mediterranean diet showed healthier gums and lower inflammation markers.

Why Mediterranean Diet Is Good For Oral Health

“The Mediterranean diet is rich with antioxidants, fiber, omega-3 fats, and vitamins, which support gum tissue and reduce bacterial damage. On the other hand, sugary snacks, processed foods, and acidic drinks erode enamel and fuel gum disease. Thus, a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and calcium-rich foods, along with good hydration, is recommended to promote long-term oral health,” says Dr Biswas.

Tips For Good Oral Health

Our expert recommends that one should brush twice a day, and get their dental checkup done once or twice a year. “This is mandatory for good oral health,” adds Dr Biswas. Here are some dietary tips to maintain a good oral hygiene:

Floss once a day

When we brush, there are spaces between our teeth we can’t reach. To clean those areas effectively, you can use dental floss.

Use an antibacterial mouthwash

Antibacterial mouthwash keeps harmful oral bacteria away. It also washes away food and debris from the teeth, which helps in reducing plaque buildup.

Avoid smoking and other tobacco products

Smoking is one of the leading causes of gum diseases and oral cancer. It is best advised to avoid it altogether, along with other tobacco products.

Brush your tongue

Tongue holds bacteria as well. So whenever you brush your teeth, brush your tongue too. You can either use a toothbrush or buy a tongue scraper for this purpose.

The Final Word

The Mediterranean Diet consists majorly of vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Since it is rich with antioxidants, fiber, omega-3 fats, and vitamins, the diet supports gum tissue and reduces bacterial damage. This helps in promoting long-term oral health. Along with a good diet, one must follow lifestyle habits like regular brushing, flossing and use of mouthwash, to keep their oral hygiene in place.
