Like all things sexual, even masturbation is a highly taboo topic that is surrounded by some wild claims. You may have heard that too much masturbation can cause infertility, pesky acne, unwanted hair, or even addiction. However as per Planned Parenthood, ‘None of that’s true.’ It continued, ‘Masturbation isn’t unhealthy or bad for you at all. Masturbation can actually be good for your health, both mentally and physically.’
To understand the health benefits of masturbation for women, and if it has any negative effects at all, the team of OnlyMyHealth spoke to Dr Rajashri Tayshete Bhasale, Consultant Gynecologist & Obstetrician, Laparoscopic Surgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road.
Health Benefits Of Masturbation
“Masturbation is a normal and healthy sexual activity, and it can have various physical and mental health benefits. However, it's essential to approach this topic without judgment and recognise that individual experiences may vary,” urged Dr Bhasale.

Negative Effects Of Masturbation For Women
Dr Anand shared that Masturbation itself is not associated with negative physical effects for women. “However, excessive or compulsive masturbation can interfere with daily life, relationships, and responsibilities, which could be a concern,” he added.

However, the guilt, shame, or anxiety related to masturbation could negatively impact mental health. Hence he advised, “It's crucial for women to have a healthy attitude and open communication about their sexual well-being, to enjoy the benefits of masturbation without succumbing to the societal stereotypes related to the activity.”
As per Planned Parenthood, masturbation can have some pitfalls, but they are more rational than what you may have heard till now. ‘It’s possible for masturbation to cause irritation or infections if your body is sensitive to the way you masturbate or the things you masturbate with,’ the organisation shared. Additionally, germs from the anus can cause vaginal infections, so avoid switching between your anus and vagina.
In conclusion, masturbation is nothing to be shy of. Everyone does it, and it can probably be beneficial for you too. Just try to ward off the stigma to not feel like you are doing something wrong. Ultimately, what's most important is your comfort, choices, and well-being. If you still have concerns about your sexual health or its impact on your mental well-being, it's advisable to consult a gynaecologist or a mental health professional for guidance and support.
