Certain changes in the human body can tell a lot about your health. Just like other body parts your tongue can also give clues about your health. Your tongue gets affected by your health in many ways that you might not know. Unusual tongue patterns indicate some serious health issues. You must observe your tongue every morning. There can be a change in colour or deposition of certain material on the tongue. Such changes can indicate weak health or development of any serious disease. A healthy tongue is pink in colour with small modules all over it. Here are some changes in the tongue which you must watch out for.

Bright red-coloured tongue

Bumps

Sometimes you may experience a bump on your tongue. It could be white or red. The bump is usually painless on the side of the tongue. Bumps on the tongue may indicate excess formation of acid in the stomach. An extra amount of acid is produced in the stomach when you consume a lot of fatty and fried foods. These bumps are generally painless but they can make eating a little uncomfortable. If the bumps stay for more than two weeks then you must consult a doctor immediately because it may be an early sign of oral cancer.

Creamy white layer

If you notice a white creamy layer on your tongue it may indicate yeast infection. It may occur due to overconsumption of antibiotics. It also indicates a weak immune system or diabetes. A creamy white layered tongue can lead to a change in taste or a little pain. You must visit a doctor in such a case.

Thick yellow coating

A thick yellow coating on the tongue means poor oral hygiene. You must take care of your oral hygiene and clean your tongue daily. Excess deposition of yellow material on the tongue can further lead to bacterial infection. It can also lead to bad breath.

Tongue has small modules on it. If your tongue is smooth without small bumps on it then you are suffering from the deficiency of certain nutrients like iron, folic acid or vitamin B. You must consult your doctor for the same and consume the required nutrients through diet or supplements.

Apart from these signs, you must clean your tongue while brushing on a regular basis to avoid any development of infection or bacteria on the tongue. Your tongue is exposed to bacteria just like your teeth. It is also necessary to maintain overall oral hygiene. An unclean tongue is also responsible for bad breath. You must brush your tongue back and forth properly and even from the sides. After brushing rinse your mouth properly.
