Dr. Rajan calls dark chocolate more than a sweet treat and it’s a gut–brain ally. It contains prebiotic fibre that feeds beneficial gut microbes. These friendly microbes then produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which help maintain gut barrier function, regulate inflammation, and support metabolism and immunity.

He explains, “Dark chocolate is rich in polyphenols like flavonoids, powerful plant compounds broken down by your gut into bioactive metabolites. These microbial byproducts can influence mood, cognition, and inflammation.”

Here’s what you get by eating just 50 grams (about 4 squares) of different dark chocolates, based on cacao content:

  • 70% dark chocolate: Around 6 grams of fibre
  • 80% dark chocolate: About 7 grams of fibre and up to 1,000 mg of flavonoids
  • 85% dark chocolate: Roughly 8 grams of fibre and up to 1,200 mg of flavonoids
  • 90% dark chocolate: Nearly 10 grams of fibre and over 1,500 mg of flavonoids, but beware, very bitter!
  • 100% dark chocolate: Pure cacao, almost zero sugar, loaded with fibre and flavonoids. Dr. Rajan says this is “basically a health supplement rather than a dessert.”

Fibre feeds your gut microbes, encouraging a healthy microbiome, while flavonoids improve blood flow to the brain by relaxing your blood vessels. Better blood flow can enhance memory, focus, and overall brain health.

Not all chocolates are equal. Milk chocolates and highly processed bars lack the fibre and flavonoid content of high-cacao dark chocolates. Eating 50 grams of quality dark chocolate a few times a week can offer benefits, but too much adds calories and fat.

Dr. Rajan advises choosing chocolates with at least 70% cacao for the best health payoff and pairing dark chocolate with nuts or berries to make a balanced snack.
