Hyperthyroidism is a medical condition wherein the thyroid gland becomes abnormal and releases an excess of the thyroid hormones (thyroxine and triiodothyronine). It is owing to this reason that hyperthyroidism is often referred to as ‘overactive thyroid’.

There are several common symptoms of hyperthyroidism in men, which should not be ignored or left untreated. Hypothyroidism is another form of thyroid imbalance in men wherein they possess low thyroid hormone levels or have an underactive thyroid gland.

Common Signs of Hyperthyroidism

  • The common symptoms of hyperthyroidism in men include restlessness, fatigue, sweating, appetite changes, unexplained weight loss and troubles to concentrate
  • In the medical condition, the thyroid enlarges causing the area around the neck and throat to swell
  • Gynecomastia – There could also be unusual swelling of the breast tissue making men grow chest unusually. Although, hyperthyroidism is not a serious medical concern, men find it difficult to deal with. The enlargement of breasts in men can be reversed with medication that reduces the body's thyroxine levels

Less Common Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism

  • Men may have clammy skin, hair loss, hand tremors, diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea and weakness due to hyperthyroidism
  • There could be an unusual change in heartbeat, which usually becomes fast or irregular
  • Blood pressure may also increase in this medical condition. Frequent bowel movements, heat intolerance, increased sweating, nervousness, restlessness, hair loss, hand tremor, anxiety, osteoporosis, itching throughout the body, nausea, vomiting, protruding eyes (exophthalmos), sleeping difficulty and fatigue are the possible symptoms of hyperthyroidism
  • The symptoms of high thyroid hormone condition may be difficult to perceive at first, but they gradually become severe. In elderly men, hyperthyroidism is more difficult to be diagnosed because most of the prominent symptoms decrease with only those of depression and weight loss remaining

Causes of Hyperthyroidism in Men

Hyperthyroidism could occur as a result of several medical conditions and diseases, which include

  • inflammation of the thyroid (thyroiditis)
  • getting iodine in excess
  • graves disease
  • tumours of the testes or ovaries
  • viral infections and
  • non-cancerous growth of thyroid or pituitary gland

Treatment of hyperthyroidism depends on its cause and symptoms. Antithyroid medications, taking radioactive iodine (stops the excess production of hormones) and surgery to remove the thyroid are the treatment options. Beta-blockers, such as propranolol, may also be used to treat some of the symptoms associated with hyperthyroidism, such as rapid heart rate, sweating and anxiety.

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism should never be ignored as they may have negative impact on several organs.
