Through The Eyes Of Wellness: How Yoga And Eye Exercises Benefit Children's Vision

In today's digital age, prioritising children's eye health is essential due to the prevalence of screens and the associated risks of eye strain and vision problems. To combat these issues and cultivate healthy vision habits, integrating yoga and eye exercises into children's daily routines can be incredibly beneficial. Dr Mandeep Singh Basu, Eye Specialist, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) - Jagat Pharma and Director - Dr Basu Eye Hospital, explores the positive impact of yoga and eye exercises on children's eye health and offers practical tips for incorporating them into their lives.

Benefits of Yoga Poses for Children's Eyes

Relieves Eye Strain

"Yoga poses and exercises help relax eye muscles, alleviating strain caused by prolonged screen time or focusing on nearby objects. This relaxation prevents or reduces eye fatigue and dryness," said Dr Basu.

Improves Blood Circulation

"Certain yoga postures and movements enhance blood flow to the eyes, supplying oxygen and nutrients to the visual system. Improved circulation contributes to better overall eye health and function," he added.

Enhances Eye Coordination

Eye Exercises for Healthy Vision

Palming

"Encourage your child to rub their hands together vigorously, generating warmth. Then, they should gently place warm palms over their closed eyes, relaxing and breathing deeply. This technique relieves eye strain and calms the mind," said Dr Basu.

Focusing Exercises

"Guide your child to practice focusing their eyes on various objects at different distances," added Dr Basu. Citing an example, he said that children can focus on a nearby object for a few seconds, and then shift their gaze to a distant one. "This exercise strengthens eye muscles and improves their ability to adjust focus," said Dr Basu.

Eye-Rolling

"Teach your child to roll their eyes clockwise and counterclockwise in a controlled manner. This exercise relaxes and stretches the eye muscles, promoting blood circulation," he added.

Blinking Exercises

Dr Basu advised parents to remind their children to consciously blink frequently while using digital devices or engaging in visually demanding activities. "Blinking moisturises the eyes prevents dryness, and reduces eye strain," he highlighted.

Incorporating Yoga and Eye Exercises into Daily Routine

Set Dedicated Time

"Allocate specific time slots for yoga and eye exercises in your child's daily routine, ensuring they have sufficient time to practice without feeling rushed," said Dr Basu.

Make It Enjoyable

"Infuse the exercises with playfulness to engage your child. Use colourful props and storytelling, or turn the activities into games to maintain their interest and motivation," added the doctor.

Practice Together

Dr Basu advised parents to lead by example and participate in yoga and eye exercises alongside their children. "This strengthens your bond and encourages them to follow your lead, making the experience more enjoyable," he stated.

Encourage Screen Breaks

"Urge your child to take regular breaks from digital devices and engage in outdoor activities or hobbies that involve physical movement and eye relaxation," said Dr Basu.

Incorporating Ayurveda with Yoga

In addition to yoga and eye exercises, Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, offers valuable insights and practices to support children's eye health. Here are a few Ayurvedic tips that can be performed, as per Dr Basu.

Nourishing Eye Diet

Encourage your child to consume a diet rich in eye-friendly nutrients. Dr Basu suggested including carrots, leafy greens, berries, citrus fruits, nuts, and seeds. "These foods are known to contain essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that promote eye health," he stated.

Triphala Eye Wash

Triphala, a herbal combination of three fruits, can be used to prepare an eye wash. Dr Basu suggested mixing a small amount of Triphala powder in warm water and using it to gently wash your child's eyes. This practice helps to soothe and cleanse the eyes, promoting overall eye wellness.

Rose Water Compress

"Applying a few drops of pure rose water to a clean cotton pad and gently placing it over closed eyes can provide a refreshing and soothing effect. Rose water is known for its cooling properties and can help reduce eye inflammation and fatigue," said Dr Basu.

Adequate sleep

"Ensure that your child gets enough sleep, as it plays a vital role in maintaining good eye health. A well-rested body and mind contribute to overall eye relaxation and rejuvenation," said Dr Basu.

Conclusion

Ayurvedic tips should be used in conjunction with yoga and eye exercises to enhance the overall benefits. Integrating these holistic practices into your child's routine can promote healthier vision habits and support their long-term eye health in the digital era.
