In this article, we reached out to experts from Baby Joy IVF, Delhi to get answers to five commonly asked questions on how to get pregnant with IVF.

1. How easy is it to get pregnant after IVF?

Let us first start with what is IVF? It is a rather simple process that starts with stimulation injections to produce more eggs , followed by egg pick up under short general anaesthesia, followed by Fertilisation in lab and finally Embryo transfer without any general anaesthesia. Egg pick up and embryo transfers are about half hour each. All are day procedures and are mostly painless. So IVF is a simple process. Anyone who is not able to conceive naturally after 1 year of marriage can go for it, shares Mr. Vivek Kohli, Founder Baby Joy IVF.

2. How many rounds of IVF does it take to get pregnant?

It depends from couple to couple. Each case is unique & requires customised treatment. In many cases success is achieved in the 1st attempt. However, in some cases multiple attempts could be required. One needs to be patient with the process.

Dr. Neha Gupta, Sr. Fertility & IVF Consultant at Baby Joy IVF shares that IVF is becoming a common way to conceive among couples today; however, the technique isn't completely fool-proof, as it may take more than two complete stimulation IVF cycles to have a successful pregnancy.

  • Each stimulation cycle has a few steps that need chronological follow-ups, but if the first step fails, the cycle is abandoned and started afresh.
  • The entire IVF procedure tends to take about three weeks, with an additional wait of two weeks to test for a successful pregnancy.
  • Apart from medical provisions, the couple's demographics also play a vital role in determining the number of attempts required for a successful pregnancy through IVF.
  • Similar to normal conceiving, age plays a crucial role in determining the success rate of pregnancy through IVF.
  • Reports confirm that the success rate of IVF reduces with age, although the procedure is still possible.
  • A healthy body is equally important for a healthy pregnancy; therefore, couples must consult their IVF experts to have thorough guidance through the IVF journey.
  • Both males and females looking forward to IVF must stay physically and mentally healthy to increase the chances of a successful stimulation cycle and maintain a healthy lifestyle after a stimulation cycle to get a successful and healthy pregnancy.

A study also reveals that 20% of couples who went through an IVF procedure were later able to conceive naturally, as many couples may not be infertile but subfertile. Although there is no guarantee of conceiving naturally through IVF, there may still be a possibility. An unsuccessful IVF cycle can be emotionally heavy, especially for the female, but a couple shouldn't lose hope and continue with the process.
