Bad breath is a big turn-off but what can be more off-putting is a sour, acidic taste in the mouth. Poor oral hygiene is probably one of the first things that come to your mind but there could be several other reasons behind it. In an interaction with the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr Vipin Dehane, HOD-Dentistry & Maxillofacial Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, talks about the most common causes of a sour taste in the mouth.

Common Cause Of Sour Taste In The Mouth
Here are some of the common causes of sour taste in the mouth.
Dehydration
According to Dr Dehane, dehydration can cause dryness of the mouth, which in turn lead to a change in taste sensation. The key is to drink enough water daily and stay hydrated.
Poor Oral Health
“Not brushing regularly can cause plaque and bacteria build-up on your tongue,” said Dr Dehane. He added,“Dental infections, gingivitis or gum disease can alter your taste sensation.” Pay attention to proper maintenance of oral hygiene at home, along with regular visits to your dentist for check-ups. Dental cleanings are a must and should not be avoided.
Acid Reflux
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux causes acid or bile to rise up into the food pipe, which may be the reason for acidic taste in the mouth. A study published in the Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility found that patients with gastroparesis and GERD often report decreased enjoyment when eating. Certain patients also complain that their food does not smell or taste the same. Managing GERD with certain diet and lifestyle changes can help, said Dr Dehane.
Multiple infections
Experiencing multiple infections or illnesses like flu may affect your taste buds, according to the doctor. Therefore, maintain personal hygiene, wash your hands often, and avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Vitamin B12 deficiency
Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient that helps in the development of brain and nerve cells. As per Dr Dehane, it has been associated with loss/alteration of taste sensation. To treat the condition, you can either eat vitamin B12-rich foods including fish, eggs, and dairy products, or resort to vitamin supplements, as guided by your doctor.
Hormonal changes
Dr Dehane said, “Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause a change in taste perception.” This is called dysgeusia. It may either make you dislike a food that you normally love, or enjoy food you normally hate. It can cause a sour or metallic taste in your mouth, even when you haven’t had anything. According to the doctor, it tends to resolve as the pregnancy progresses.
Certain medications
“Certain medications like antibiotics, antidepressants, and antihistamines may cause a sour taste in the mouth,” said Dr Dehane, adding that usually, the taste perception gets better after stopping the medications. A study published in the Official Publication of The College of Family Physicians of Canada found that more than 250 medications affect smell or taste. In the elderly, impairment of these senses has been correlated with weight loss, mood change, and even functional decline.
Smoking cigarettes
Smoking or use of tobacco in any other form can also affect your taste sensation, said the doctor. According to research, smokers showed significantly lower taste sensitivity than non-smokers, meaning the higher the nicotine dependence, the lower the taste sensitivity. Quitting tobacco usage can have multiple benefits on your breath, the taste in your mouth, and on your general health.
Bottomline
Next time you experience a sour taste in your mouth, make sure to rule out all the causes listed above. Since it's summer, ensure that you’re drinking enough water and staying hydrated. Maintain good oral habits. If you’re a GERD patient, make amends to your lifestyle and diet habits. Lastly, eat nutritious, healthy foods to keep your nutrient levels high.
