#KhushKhabriWithIVF: IVF is a big step in a couple’s life where they decide to take this route to embrace parenthood. IVF is certainly a tedious process but it can be challenging if you don’t have necessary knowledge about the procedure. It can get confusing which is why through our ‘Khush Khabri With IVF’ campaign, we aim to clear all the whats, whys and hows that you may have in your mind. In this article, we share five interesting facts about IVF that you may not have known before.
#1 Age of Eggs is Important
One of the prime reasons for female infertility is egg quality and quantity. With advancing age, women tend to lose on both that reduces their chances of natural conception. In short, the older a woman gets, the lesser egg quality and quantity. That being said, successful IVF procedure requires healthy eggs. This is not a magic solution to infertility issues.
According to Dr. Manju Wali, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Patparganj, Delhi, fertility decline starts in the mid 30s. Couples trying late pregnancies or older couples trying IVF may not be successful. The chances of IVF success largely depends on the maternal age.

#2 IVF cycles can be very long
The steps of IVF are complicated and while the average time of completion of the entire process is a month, it may stretch up to three months depending upon the embryo development and successful implantation. Dr. Kalyani Shrimali, Fertility Consultant at Nova IVF Fertility, Indore shares that IVF is a great option but it doesn’t guarantee success in the first attempt. When the first attempt fails, you need to go through the entire procedure again which means getting through hormonal injections, fertility medications, etc. again. Doctor also suggests that a couple must take ample wait time before trying another IVF cycle.
#3 You may need more than 1 round of IVF
Multiple IVF cycles are not uncommon. A lot of couples undergo this which is okay as this is a technical process that doesn’t bring positive results in the first attempt. According to Dr. Jasneet Kaur, Clinic Director and Sr. Consultant (Dept. Of Reproductive Medicine) at Milann Fertility Centre, Chandigarh, about 10% of couples trying IVF experience recurrent implantation failures (RIF). This can get overwhelming for the couple. Thus, it is always better to be mentally, emotionally and monetarily prepared for multiple rounds of IVF.
#4 Acupuncture can increase chances of successful IVF
Acupuncture is a great alternative therapy that offers proven benefits for many health issues. However, not many people know that this alternative practice can also increase IVF success rate. According to a study published in the Science Direct, taking 2-3 acupuncture sessions before embryo transfer increases the rate of conception in women taking IVF. Besides, it also reduces anxiety and depression.
