Laser Therapy For Removing Stretch Marks: How Effective Is The Procedure?

Stretch marks, also known as striae or striae distensae, occur when the skin's collagen and elastin fibres tear due to rapid stretching or shrinking. They are indented lines or streaks on the skin often caused by pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or puberty. While hydrating your skin by drinking plenty of water, using moisturisers, and applying ingredients like hyaluronic acid or centella asiatica are said to reduce stretch marks, some people swear by laser therapy to get rid of them. However, such procedures come with risks and side effects, and one is compelled to ask the question: is laser therapy worth the risk and money?

Does Laser Therapy Work In Removing Stretch Marks?

1

Speaking with the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr Navjot Arora, Consultant Dermatologist, Dermaheal Skin and Clinic, Dwarka, New Delhi, says, “Laser therapy can improve the appearance of stretch marks by stimulating collagen and elastin production in the skin. During the process, controlled laser energy is directed onto the skin, which promotes skin healing and regeneration. This gradually reduces the colour and texture difference between stretch marks and the surrounding skin.”

In general, stretch marks are permanent scars that can be made less noticeable with treatment, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AADA). This includes laser therapy, which is said to improve the appearance of the stretch marks.

How Many Sessions Are Usually Required?

Dr Arora says, “Laser therapy generally works better on newer stretch marks, which are still red, purple, or pink, as they respond more quickly to treatment. Older stretch marks, which appear white or silver, are harder to treat but can still show improvement with multiple sessions, though results may take longer.”

He adds, “Most patients begin to notice visible changes after 3 to 5 sessions. However, the exact number depends on the individual’s skin type, severity, and age of the stretch marks. Some may require up to 8–10 sessions for more significant improvement.”

As per the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, a series of up to 20 sessions is required over several weeks in order to see a 20-60% improvement in appearance.

Risks, Side Effects, And Recovery

Common side effects of laser therapy include:

  • Mild redness
  • Swelling
  • Sensitivity in the treated area, which usually resolves within a few days

“Rarely, there can be pigment changes, blistering, or scarring, especially if post-treatment care is not followed,” shares Dr Arora, adding that patients should avoid sun exposure, use sunscreen, and follow aftercare instructions to ensure safe recovery.

It is important to note that laser therapy may not be for everyone. It may not be suitable for pregnant women, people with certain skin conditions, very dark skin tones at higher risk of pigmentation issues, or those with a history of poor wound healing.

“A thorough consultation with a dermatologist is essential before starting treatment,” Dr Arora concludes.
