How does the Chinese Pregnancy Calendar Work

Wondering on how does Chinese pregnancy calendar works? The columns of this calendar feature mother’s age from eighteen to forty-five years. Each of the columns is divided into twelve rows, each of them representing a month. As mentioned before you need to know your lunar age and month of conception to find out gender of your child with the help of this calendar.


  • Knowing month of conception: To know the month of conception you can either take help of your doctor or use online pregnancy calculators.
  • Knowing mother's lunar age at the time of conception: Chinese New Year can begin anywhere from end of January to the mid of February. If you are born after Chinese New Year then simply add one year to your present Gregorian age (English calender age). For instance, if your age is 25 according to Gregorian age then your Chinese lunar age will be 26 year. If you are born before Chinese New Year then add two years to your Gregorian age.

Now figured out your age of conception on the extreme left vertical column and month of conception on the top horizontal row. Find the place where these column and row intersect to know gender of your baby.


History of Chinese Pregnancy Calendar

This calendar was supposedly made by Chinese astrologists as there was no other way to know gender of the unborn child. In Imperial China, the pregnancy calendar was used by the royalty to ensure male heir. It is only after the fall of imperialism that this calendar was used by ordinary citizens. The original Chinese calendar is at the Institute of Science and Technology in Beijing.
