Melasma: Home remedies that will clean up your facial skin

Melasma is a common skin disorder and it can affect people of all races, ages and sexes. It can be characterized by patchy brown, blue-gray or tan discolouration of the facial skin that is most commonly seen in women. The disorder mostly affects facial skin and neck – most commonly on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and chin. 

The main cause of developing the skin problem is the presence of too much melanin in the skin cells, which mainly occurs due to overexposure to the sun. Some of the contributing factors to the development of the disorder include a sedentary lifestyle, thyroid problems, toxins, hormonal changes and the use of contraceptive pills. 

Those of you suffering from melasma, here is how you can address the problem with things found in your kitchen: 

Turmeric 

Turmeric, also known as haldi has a multitude of health benefits to offer, making a popular kitchen ingredient. Turmeric is an excellent source to cure skin problems. The active ingredient, curcumin contains antioxidants, which helps reduce the production of melanin in the skin cells. It also clears the body of all the toxins and helps get rid of skin problems such as acne and pimples. 

How to use: Mix 5 tbsp of turmeric with 10 tbsp of milk and apply on the skin affected by melasma. Wash it with lukewarm water after it completely dries out.

Apple Cider Vinegar 

Apple cider vinegar has an acetic acid in it that makes it a powerful agent, which helps remove spots and give you a glowing skin. 

How to use: Mix equal amount of apple cider vinegar and water. Apply on the affected skin daily for effective results. 

Lemon juice 

Raw lemon juice is an incredible remedy to cure all skin problems. It has astringent properties that lighten the dark spots and the acidic property of lemon eliminates the hyperpigmented skin. 

How to use: Squash out the lemon juice from a lemon and apply it on the melasma spots and rub gently for 2-3 minutes, thrice a week for best results. 

Papaya 

This multipurpose fruit offers numerous health benefits. It is a natural and powerful remedy for melasma and it is easily available in the market. Papaya contains a natural enzyme which removes dead and damaged skin cells. It also restores the natural colour of the skin. 

How to use: Make a paste of a few pieces of papaya and add 2 tbsp of honey to it. Mix and apply it on the face thoroughly to get rid of the disorder. After 20 minutes, wash it off with lukewarm water. 

Aloe Vera 

Aloe vera has hydrating properties and it contains an extract called Mucilaginous Polysaccharides helps lighten blemishes and dark spots caused by sun exposure and melasma discolouration. Aloe vera also protects the skin from damage caused by oxidative stress. 

How to use: Take an aloe vera leaf and cut it in half with a knife. Now massage gently on the skin for about 4-5 minutes and let it sit for 20 minutes. Rinse it with lukewarm water and use a lotion to moisturize your skin.
