World IBD Day 2024: History, Theme, and Significance

World IBD Day, marked annually on May 19th, is a global event dedicated to raising awareness of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD refers to two main conditions: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, both of which cause chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. This day provides an opportunity to support those living with IBD, educate the public about these disorders, and lobby for better research and treatment choices.

“IBD is characterised by structural damage, inflammation, and immune system dysregulation, all of which cause tissue destruction. Symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, weight loss, and exhaustion can have a substantial influence on the patient's quality of life,” said Dr Aditya Shah, DM Medical Gastroenterology, Consultant in the Department of Medical Gastroenterology, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Chennai.

History of World IBD Day

World IBD Day was established by patient organisations and advocacy groups around the world to unite and amplify their voices in the fight against IBD. The initiative was spearheaded by the European Federation of Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis Associations (EFCCA) in 2010. Since then, it has grown into a global movement, with participation from over 50 countries and support from numerous health organisations and professionals.

The day was chosen to coincide with the birthday of Dr Burrill Crohn, the American gastroenterologist who first described Crohn's disease in 1932. This connection underscores the importance of medical research and the ongoing efforts to better understand and treat IBD.

Theme of World IBD Day 2024

Each year, World IBD Day focuses on a specific theme to highlight different aspects of living with IBD and to promote awareness and understanding. The theme for World IBD Day 2024 is "Empowering Patients and Caregivers."

This theme emphasises the importance of empowering individuals living with IBD and their caregivers with knowledge, resources, and support to manage the condition effectively. It aims to:

  • Increase Awareness: Educate the general public about IBD, its symptoms, and the impact it has on daily life.
  • Promote Support Networks: Highlight the significance of support groups, both online and offline, in providing emotional and practical assistance to patients and caregivers.
  • Advocate for Research: Encourage continued investment in research to develop better treatments and, ultimately, a cure for IBD.
  • Enhance Quality of Life: Share strategies and tips for managing IBD symptoms and improving the quality of life for patients.
