Joyous devotees of Ram in the entire country are excited and happy as the ‘Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony has kickstarted in Ayodhya today. Celebrations across the country are being witnessed as the Pratishtha customs are taking place. Umpteen devotees of lord Ram, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi are fasting in order to show respect to lord Ram. Here are some healthy foods you should add in your diet if you are observing fast to mark the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremony, today. 

Healthy Foods For Pran Pratishtha Fasting

1. Sabudana (Sago Pearls)

Sabudana is a go to food when it comes to fasting. You can prepare ample amounts of dishes from it like Sabudana khichdi, cutlets, papad, kheer and so on. In a conversation with Only My Health team, Shradha Singh, Consultant Dietitian, Regency Hospital, said that sago pearls are low in fat but high in carbohydrates, hence should be prepared in a healthy way. Sabudana promotes healthy blood flow and regulates blood pressure. It is good for digestion and helps heal constipation. The Dietitian advised that diabetic patients should not consume sago pearls.

2. Dairy products

Dairy products like milk, curd, yoghurt, buttermilk are nutritious for your health. They are rich in calcium and protein promoting your bone health and strengthening muscles. According to Singh, you can opt for low fat dairy products while fasting, like low fat milk and yoghurt. According to a study by Harvard school of Public Health, both low fat and full fat dairy are good sources of protein, calcium, B vitamins, and vitamin D. “Dairy foods that undergo fermentation, such as yoghurt are lower in lactose and contain healthful gut bacteria that may benefit digestive health,” the study stated.

3. Fruits

Shradha Singh said that fruits like oranges, apples and bananas are rich in minerals and vitamins and are low in fats. Citrus fruits like oranges, sweet lime, and grapefruit are a good source of vitamin C. Banana being rich in calcium, magnesium, protein, fibre, potassium and vitamin C is essential for your bone health, digestive system and helps in weight loss. It also normalises the blood sugar levels of your  body. Papaya is an essential source of antioxidants. It improves digestion, aids weight loss and heals problems like acidity and constipation. Other nutrition rich fruits you should include in your fasting diet can be apples, grapes, apricots, coconut and so on. 

4. Nuts

Sweedal Trinidade, Chief Dietitian, P. D. Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre, Mumbai, in interaction with Only My Health Team said, nuts and seeds are rich in protein and help in promoting bone health. Rich in omega 3 fatty acids and magnesium, walnut, peanuts are a healthy choice to include in your fasting diet. A study by the USDA (US Department of Agriculture) stated that 100 grams of walnuts contain 15.2 gram protein. The anti-inflammatory content of walnuts helps keep the blood vessels healthy and have favourable effects on blood lipids, stated a study by Harvard Medical School. Almonds are rich in Vitamin E and help in relieving muscle pain.
