Healthy Morning Habits: Expert Lists Benefits Of Eating Jaggery and Raw Turmeric In The Morning

Did you know your morning dietary habits play a key role in promoting your health throughout the day? Hence, starting your day with healthy rituals becomes a necessity. One such healthy routine that can promote your overall health is consuming jaggery and raw turmeric in the morning. Its health benefits extend far beyond mere nutrition, ranging from supporting immune function to promoting heart health. We spoke to our expert Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar, who listed the benefits of consuming jaggery and raw turmeric every morning.

Benefits Of Consuming Jaggery

jaggery

Jaggery, a natural sweetener derived from sugarcane juice or palm sap, has been a staple in traditional medicine for centuries. Unlike refined sugar, which undergoes extensive processing, jaggery retains its natural nutrients, including iron, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins.

Regulating Blood Sugar Levels

Dr Chaudhary said, “Despite its sweetness, jaggery has a low glycemic index, meaning it causes a slower and steadier rise in blood sugar levels compared to refined sugar. This quality makes jaggery a preferred alternative for individuals with diabetes or those seeking to manage their blood sugar levels effectively.”

immunity

Boosting Immunity

Jaggery is rich in antioxidants and minerals that help bolster the immune system. Its antimicrobial properties aid in fighting infections and warding off seasonal illnesses. Regular consumption of jaggery can enhance the body's natural defences, keeping you resilient against pathogens and diseases.

Improving Digestion

In ayurveda, jaggery is revered for its digestive properties. “It stimulates the secretion of digestive enzymes, facilitating the breakdown and absorption of nutrients. Also, jaggery acts as a natural cleanser for the digestive tract, promoting regular bowel movements and alleviating constipation”, added Dr Chaudhary.

According to a 2016 review, jaggery provides sucrose, yet it lacks significant amounts of fibre or water, both of which are dietary elements recognised for promoting regular bowel movements.

Benefits Of Raw Turmeric

Turmeric, which is known as the 'golden spice', has been a significant part of traditional medicine for its powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Though it is typically used in powder form, consuming raw turmeric, particularly when combined with jaggery in the morning, can provide numerous health benefits.

Reducing Inflammation

Turmeric's active compound, curcumin, has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. By reducing inflammation in the body, turmeric may alleviate symptoms associated with inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis, asthma, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Supporting Joint Health

“For individuals suffering from joint pain and stiffness, raw turmeric can offer relief. Its anti-inflammatory properties help mitigate inflammation in the joints, thereby improving mobility and reducing discomfort”, said Dr Chaudhary. Regular consumption of turmeric may even contribute to the prevention of degenerative joint diseases like osteoarthritis.

Promoting Heart Health

Turmeric's antioxidant properties play a crucial role in cardiovascular health. “By scavenging free radicals and reducing oxidative stress, turmeric helps protect the heart from damage and lowers the risk of heart disease. It also aids in regulating cholesterol levels, promoting overall cardiovascular wellness”, added Dr Chaudhary.

Enhancing Brain Function

“In addition to its potential neuroprotective effects, curcumin has been shown to enhance cognitive function. By crossing the blood-brain barrier, curcumin may help combat neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, as well as enhance memory and concentration”, highlighted Dr Chaudhary.

Adding Jaggery and Raw Turmeric into Your Morning Routine

Make jaggery and raw turmeric a part of your morning routine to reap their health benefits. You can start your day with a warm cup of turmeric tea sweetened with a small piece of jaggery. Alternatively, you can grate raw turmeric and sprinkle it over your breakfast cereal or mix it into a smoothie for a nutritious boost.
