Wahi added, “Dates are rich in vitamins and minerals, including potassium, magnesium, and iron, which can help prevent common pregnancy-related issues like muscle cramps, fatigue, and anaemia. Controlling Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes can be a concern during pregnancy, and it often requires dietary adjustments to manage blood sugar levels. Wahi said, “Dates have a low glycemic index, meaning they have a minimal impact on blood sugar levels when consumed in moderation. They can be an excellent option for satisfying your sweet cravings while keeping your blood sugar in check.”
Natural Labour Induction
Towards the end of pregnancy, you may be eager to meet your baby. Wahi said, “Some studies suggest that consuming dates in the last few weeks of pregnancy may help prepare your body for labour. While more research is needed, dates are believed to reduce the need for medical labour induction and facilitate a smoother delivery process.”
In a study published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, involving 154 women, researchers compared 77 participants who consumed dates late in their pregnancy with 77 who did not. The study revealed that the group consuming dates demonstrated a significantly reduced requirement for medical intervention to induce or accelerate labour, in contrast to those who did not consume dates.

Reducing the Risk of Preeclampsia
Wahi said, “Preeclampsia is a potentially dangerous condition that can develop during pregnancy, characterised by high blood pressure and damage to organs, such as the liver and kidneys.” Regular consumption of dates may help reduce the risk of preeclampsia due to their potassium content, which supports healthy blood pressure levels.
