Sipping healthy beverages first thing in the morning can help you promote your overall well-being. One such beverage that you should make part of your daily routine is rooibos tea. It is a flavourful herbal infusion that offers a plethora of health benefits, ranging from improved digestion and hydration to enhanced heart health and stress relief. Health Benefits Of Consuming Rooibos Tea

Gentle on the Stomach

Rooibos tea is naturally caffeine-free and is ideal for those with a sensitive stomach or caffeine intolerance. Dr Chaudhary said, “Drinking rooibos tea on an empty stomach won't cause jitters or stomach upset, allowing you to start your day feeling refreshed and energised.”

Rich in Antioxidants

“Rooibos tea is packed with powerful antioxidants, including aspalathin and quercetin, which help combat oxidative stress and inflammation in the body”, added Dr Chaudhary. Antioxidants play a crucial role in neutralising harmful free radicals, thereby protecting cells from damage and reducing the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer.

Balances Blood Sugar Levels

According to the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), a dihydrochalcone called aspalathin is a characteristic of rooibos and has been identified as a key ingredient in this herbal tea's anti-diabetic qualities.

Dr Chaudhary added, “The bioactive compounds found in rooibos tea can improve insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake in cells, contributing to better blood sugar control over time.”

Supports Digestive Health

People with gastrointestinal discomfort should consume this tea to promote healthy digestion and alleviate discomfort. This is possible due to the presence of compounds, such as flavonoids and polyphenols that possess anti-inflammatory properties and may help soothe digestive issues, such as indigestion, bloating, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

Hydration and Detoxification

Did you know starting your day with a warm cup of rooibos tea can aid in hydration and support the body's natural detoxification processes? Hydration is essential for maintaining optimal bodily functions, while rooibos tea's diuretic properties can help flush out toxins and waste products, promoting a healthy urinary system.

Promotes Heart Health

Regular consumption of this tea may have positive effects on cardiovascular health, including lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease. “The flavonoids present in Rooibos tea help improve blood circulation, relax blood vessels, and inhibit the formation of blood clots, thereby promoting heart function and reducing the likelihood of stroke and heart attacks”, added Dr Chaudhary.

Relieves Stress

Rooibos tea contains natural compounds that have a calming effect on the nervous system, making it an ideal beverage for promoting relaxation and reducing stress levels. Drinking it on an empty stomach can help clear the mind, improve focus, and enhance your mental well being.

Bottomline

Dr Chaudhary concluded, “While rooibos tea is generally safe for consumption, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional if you have any underlying health conditions or concerns, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.”
