Chilli Pepper To Treat Chronic Pain: Expert Explains How It Works To Relieve Pain

Did you know chilli peppers have the ability to manage chronic pain? Yes, you can manage your health conditions, such as arthritis and musculoskeletal pain. Chilli peppers, with their potent capsaicin content, offer a natural and effective approach to managing chronic pain. We spoke to our expert Dr Ekta Singhwal, MSc Dietician, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, who explained the benefits of chilli pepper in relieving pain.

Role Of Capsaicin

Capsaicin is the active component found in chilli peppers that gives them their characteristic heat. According to the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), capsaicin is the pungent ingredient of chilli peppers and is approved as a topical treatment of neuropathic pain.

Mechanism of Action

According to a 2021 study, the mechanism underlying capsaicin-induced burning pain is the selective activation of Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), which is enriched in nociceptive primary afferents.

“When capsaicin comes into contact with the skin or mucous membranes, it activates TRPV1, which is responsible for detecting sensations of heat and pain”, added Dr Singhwal.

Applications in Pain Management

Capsaicin-based treatments are commonly used to alleviate various types of chronic pain, including arthritis, neuropathy, and musculoskeletal pain.

“Topical formulations that contain capsaicin are applied directly to the site of irritation, acting to reduce inflammation and discomfort. These combinations, which vary in the amount of capsaicin and the degree of pain they relieve, can be purchased over-the-counter or with a prescription”, said Dr Singhwal.

Treating Arthritis Pain

Dr Singhwal said, “Arthritis, a common inflammatory condition characterised by joint pain and stiffness, can significantly impact quality of life. Capsaicin creams and ointments offer a non-invasive approach to managing arthritis pain by targeting inflammation and providing symptomatic relief.” Regular application of capsaicin-based formulations can help reduce joint pain and improve mobility in individuals with arthritis.

Managing Neuropathic Pain

“Neuropathic pain, caused by damage or dysfunction of the nervous system, can be challenging to treat with conventional pain medications. Capsaicin patches or creams are often used to alleviate neuropathic pain by desensitising the nerves and reducing the transmission of pain signals”, said Dr Singhwal. These topical treatments can provide significant relief for individuals suffering from conditions, such as diabetic neuropathy, post-herpetic neuralgia, and trigeminal neuralgia.

Alleviating Musculoskeletal Pain

Musculoskeletal pain, resulting from injuries, overuse, or muscle tension, can cause discomfort and interfere with daily activities. Capsaicin-based creams and gels offer a natural alternative for relieving muscle and joint pain associated with these conditions. The warming sensation produced by capsaicin can help soothe sore muscles and promote relaxation, allowing for greater flexibility and range of motion.

Precautions and Considerations

Dr Singhwal highlighted, “While capsaicin-based treatments are generally considered safe and well-tolerated, it's essential to use them as directed and exercise caution to avoid adverse effects. Some people may experience temporary burning or stinging sensations upon application, which typically subside as the skin becomes accustomed to the treatment. It's also important to avoid applying capsaicin to broken or irritated skin, as it may exacerbate discomfort.”

Incorporating Chilli Pepper into Your Diet

In addition to topical applications, incorporating chilli peppers into your diet may offer additional health benefits, including potential pain relief. Dr Singhwal added, “Capsaicin-rich foods, such as jalapeños, cayenne peppers, and habaneros, can help boost metabolism, promote cardiovascular health, and reduce inflammation throughout the body. However, it's essential to consume chilli peppers in moderation, as excessive intake may lead to digestive discomfort or irritation.”
