Psychiatrist Helps Us To Understand Ageing

As we journey through life, a natural progression unfolds, bringing changes in both physical and mental capacities. In a video for Only My Health youtube channel, Dr Nimesh G Desai, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist and Former Director of IHBAS Delhi, guides us through the nuances of mental health in the elderly, shedding light on the unique challenges they encounter.

The Three Ds: Navigating Challenges in Aging

Depression, Dementia, and Disability emerge as significant considerations in the mental health landscape of the elderly. Dr Desai addresses the prevalence of depression in older age, emphasising the need to understand its social roots. Primarily, acummulation of disease processes and the loss of grey cells contribute to the complexities of mental health in the elderly.

Abilities To Perform Daily Tasks Changes

Aging brings a shift in efficiency, where once-simple tasks become more challenging. Dr Desai emphasises the importance of acknowledging these changes as natural aspects of the ageing process, calling for a considerate and supportive approach from caregivers.

Embracing Change: A Mental Landscape in Transition

Beyond the physical changes, the mental landscape of the elderly transforms. In the video, Dr Desai advises against dwelling excessively on the past. He urges old age people to a forward-looking perspective for mental well-being.  According to him, cherishing positive memories should be encouraged and it is important to encourage a sense of comfort and happiness through the recollection of joyous experiences.

Acceptance of changing circumstances becomes crucial. Whether it's adapting to physical limitations or evolving social dynamics, embracing change significantly contributes to mental resilience in the elderly.

The Power of Connection: Social Interaction in Aging

Social interaction plays a pivotal role in the mental health of older individuals. Dr Desai highlights that depression, a common challenge in adulthood, often stems from social causes like increased dependence on others. In cultures with strong family structures, maintaining social connections becomes integral for fostering a positive mental environment.

Family Bonds: A Key to Peaceful Aging

As per Dr Desai, in comparison to Western countries, where family structures may differ, Indian cultures often have strong family connections. Dr Desai emphasises that preserving these family bonds is crucial for ensuring a peaceful, happy, and graceful old age.

Dr Desai advises elderly individuals to lower their expectations from friends and family, recognising that everyone is navigating their own challenges. Emphasising the purpose of life, he suggests it is a cornerstone for a fulfilling and contented existence.

Bridging Generational Gaps

In a society where the generational gap can sometimes widen. Dr Nimesh says, “ Harmonious connection between the young and the elderly is vital for individual well-being and the overall health of the nation.”
