If you are into fitness or regularly work out in the gym, gynecomastia, popularly known as man boobs, has likely been a concern for you. Many men spend hours in the gym performing endless chest presses, hoping to burn off the tissue, but often see little to no results. This can be incredibly frustrating affecting the confidence. In the struggle to get rid of these tissues, many also fall victim to the misinformation and myths surrounding them.
To help you separate these facts from the gym-floor myths, the editorial team of Onlymyhealth reached out to Varnit Yadav, a Nutrition, Exercise, and Fitness Expert and Trainer from Lucknow. He breaks down what actually happens to the chest tissue and why your workout might not be the cure you think it is. Keep reading:
What Is Gynecomastia?
According to a report from the Cleveland Clinic, gynecomastia is enlarged breast (chest) tissue in males. It is a benign (non-cancerous) increase in breast volume due to an increase in glandular tissue, as mentioned in the report. Obesity can also be a reason behind the increase in breast size.

Many believe gynecomastia only affects adults, but the report indicates that the condition can affect males of all ages, whether working out in the gym or not. However, this mostly occurs during the newborn period, puberty, and older adulthood. While having man boobs is not a physical health condition, it can have a negative impact on self-esteem, underlines Yadav. He further clarifies a few common doubts:
1. Can Chest Exercises, Like Bench Presses, Help Burn Off Gynecomastia?
Many people believe that targeting the chest with heavy weights will melt the glandular tissue. However, Yadav Yadav explains that any exercise that stimulates or trains your chest, be it any form of bench press, push-ups, or band movements, will not help you treat gynecomastia. "While you can build and strengthen your pectoral (chest) muscles and reduce overall body fat with proper nutrition protocols, these exercises alone won’t help you get rid of the actual glandular tissue."

2. Is it Possible to Get Rid of True Gynecomastia Through Diet and Gym Supplements Alone?
If you are dealing with gynecomastia, a restrictive diet or fat-burner supplements won't be enough. Yadav clarifies that this condition affects the glandular tissue and it cannot be resolved with a simple workout routine or calorie cutting. True gynecomastia requires medical intervention and, in some cases, surgery is the only way to resolve the issue.
3. How Can A Person Tell The Difference Between Excess Chest Fat And Actual Glandular Tissue?
It is very common for people to confuse excess body fat around the chest region with true gynecomastia. According to Yadav, the best way to get it assessed is with the help of a doctor. "Once you start to lose fat through a consistent routine, you will begin to notice the difference. True gynecomastia often feels a bit firm or rubbery compared to typical softer fatty tissue found in the chest area," he highlights.

4. Do Certain Gym Supplements or Anabolic Steroids Actually Cause This Condition?
There is a lot of fear around supplements, but we need to distinguish between natural products and performance enhancers. Yadav explains that anabolic steroids certainly can cause this condition and affect your hormone levels significantly. "There are specific growth hormones and testosterone derivatives which lead to this condition with prolonged usage or higher dosages," he states. However, standard gym supplements like whey protein, creatine monohydrate, or pre-workouts will not lead to such a condition.

5. Does Wearing Compression Shirts or Chest Binders During Workouts Help or Hinder Recovery?
Many use compression gear for aesthetic reasons, but it doesn't change the physical recovery of the tissue. Varnit notes that it is a personal choice on what a person would like to wear. "While compressions can lead to a boost in confidence, logically and scientifically speaking, it won't hinder or slow down any recovery, nor will it boost the healing process in any way," he states.
6. At What Point Should Someone Stop Trying to Fix It in The Gym and See A Doctor Instead?
Parnit underlines that Persistence is key, but you must know when the problem is medical. "Once a person has spent at least 4-6 months following a structured workout routine along with a meal plan that supports a caloric deficit, they will notice physical changes around the whole body. If these sincere efforts lead to fat loss elsewhere but the chest remains unchanged or if the area is followed by a lump-like feeling, pain, or increased sensitivity, it is a good idea to get yourself checked by a doctor," he mentions.

Bottomline
The most important thing to remember is that you cannot exercise away a hormonal glandular condition. While the gym can help you reduce fat and build muscle, true gynecomastia is a medical issue that often requires a professional diagnosis. As Yadav mentions, if the condition persists even after a few months of diet and exercise, one should consult with a medical professional.
