Diwali celebrations often involve fireworks, sparklers, and firecrackers, but a moment of carelessness can turn festive excitement into a medical emergency. Among the most serious risks are eye injuries, which can occur when sparks, flying fragments, or chemical particles come into contact with the eyes.
While some injuries may cause temporary irritation, others can damage the cornea, lens, or retina and even lead to permanent vision loss. What makes these injuries particularly dangerous is that the extent of internal damage may not be visible immediately.
We spoke to Dr Shibal Bhartiya, Clinical Director – Ophthalmology at Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram, to understand potential risks and preventive tips.
How Do Firecrackers Damage the Eyes?
A firecracker injury is rarely caused by a spark alone. The eye may be exposed to several forces simultaneously, including a blast wave, flying fragments, intense heat, and chemical residue from the explosive material, according to a report published in the journal 'Case Reports in Ophthalmology'.
The nature of the injury depends on how close the person is to the firecracker and what strikes the eye.
At the front of the eye, the cornea, which is the transparent outer layer, can develop scratches or burns. Chemical residue from firecracker powder can cause additional irritation or chemical burns.
A stronger impact can damage structures inside the eye. These injuries may include:
- Hyphema: Bleeding in the anterior chamber, the space between the cornea and iris.
- Iris damage: A tear in the coloured part of the eye, which can affect how the pupil responds to light.
- Lens damage: The lens may become cloudy or displaced, affecting vision.
- Vitreous haemorrhage: Bleeding into the jelly-like substance that fills the eye.
- Retinal injury: The retina may swell, tear, or become detached, potentially causing serious vision loss.
- Eyeball rupture: In severe cases, the impact can cause the eyeball to tear or rupture.
The eyelids and the bones surrounding the eyes can also suffer burns, cuts, or fractures.
Why Even a Mild-Looking Eye Injury Can Be Serious
One of the biggest concerns with firecracker injuries is that the visible symptoms do not always reflect the actual damage.
An eye that appears mildly red or sore may have internal bleeding or a retinal tear. Some complications may also develop after the initial injury rather than immediately.
For instance, retinal detachment may become noticeable days or weeks after the accident.
Increased eye pressure caused by internal damage can sometimes develop months or even years later.
Therefore, anyone who experiences a significant impact to the eye should undergo an ophthalmic examination and attend recommended follow-up appointments, even if their vision initially seems normal.

Bystanders Are Also at Risk
It is not just people lighting firecrackers who are vulnerable to eye injuries.
- Bystanders, including children standing nearby, neighbours watching fireworks from balconies, and pedestrians passing through crowded areas, can also get hurt.
- Rockets and spinning fireworks such as charkhis can change direction unexpectedly, sending sparks and fragments towards people who may be standing at a distance.
- Children are particularly vulnerable because they may not understand the risks associated with fireworks or know how to maintain a safe distance.
What Should You Do Immediately After a Firecracker Eye Injury?
A firecracker injury involving the eye should always be treated as an emergency. Immediate medical attention can help prevent further damage and improve the chances of saving vision.
Follow these precautions while arranging emergency care:
- Do not rub the eye: Rubbing or pressing can worsen the injury and cause additional damage.
- Do not remove stuck objects: If a fragment is embedded in the eye, leave it untouched and seek emergency help.
- Avoid eye drops and home remedies: Do not apply ointments, oils, kajal, or other substances without medical advice.
- Protect the injured eye: If a penetrating injury is suspected, loosely cover the eye with a clean, rigid shield, such as the base of a paper cup secured around the eye socket. Ensure that nothing presses against the eyeball.
- Rinse chemical splashes: If firecracker powder or chemicals enter the eye, immediately flush it with plenty of clean running water. Continue rinsing while arranging transport to hospital. Do not delay irrigation.
- Seek emergency treatment: Go to the nearest eye emergency department immediately. Do not wait for redness, pain or blurred vision to improve.
If a deep or penetrating injury is suspected, avoid giving food or drink while seeking emergency care, as surgery may be required. Do not delay reaching the hospital to follow this precaution.
How Can You Prevent Firecracker-Related Eye Injuries?
Most firecracker-related eye injuries can be prevented by following basic safety measures.
- Wear protective safety glasses when handling fireworks.
- Maintain a safe distance from lit firecrackers.
- Never lean over a cracker after lighting it.
- Avoid picking up or relighting fireworks that fail to explode.
- Keep children away from areas where firecrackers are being lit.
- Never point rockets or other fireworks towards people, buildings, or balconies.
Final Word
A firecracker injury can damage several parts of the eye, even when the initial symptoms appear minor. Never ignore an eye injury during Diwali or attempt to treat it with home remedies. Immediate medical attention and proper follow-up are essential to protect vision.
