Deadlifts, squats, and overhead presses are three expert-recommended compound exercises that target every major muscle group. Read ahead to know how it benefits full-body strength.

If you want a full-body workout but don’t have hours to spend in the gym, focusing on a few powerful compound exercises can deliver maximum results. According to fitness experts, some exercises involve more than one muscle group simultaneously, and this is one of the simplest ways to build strength, gain better stability, and save time.

In an exclusive interaction with the editorial team of Onlymyhealth, Varnit Yadav, Nutrition, Exercise, and Fitness Expert and Trainer, from Lucknow, explained that you do not need a list full of exercises to train the whole body. Compound movements that engage multiple joints and muscle groups can provide a complete workout. If done correctly, just a few exercises can target almost every major muscle group,” he said. Read ahead to know everything he shared with us.

Exercises That Hit Every Major Muscle Group

Here are three essential, expert-approved exercises that can help you build total-body strength:

1. Deadlifts

Deadlifts are also among the best exercises that help to build overall strength. The exercise is done by lifting a weight off the ground, which activates multiple muscle groups simultaneously.

Varnit shared, “Deadlifts involve picking something heavy off the floor, which engages the posterior chain, including the glutes, hamstring and lower back. In addition to the lower body, deadlifts also work for:

  • Core muscles
  • Upper back
  • Forearms and grip strength
  • Shoulders for stability

These markers makes deadlifts to be one of the most comprehensive strength-building exercises. According to Varnit, deadlifts also helps in correcting posture and the back muscles, while making daily tasks such as carrying objects a lot easier and safer.

2. Squats

Another important compound movement that can be used to train multiple muscles simultaneously is squats. “When performed correctly and effectively, squats target your legs but at the same time make the core work while helping you build stronger ankles,” Varnit explained. Squats primarily target:

  • Quadriceps
  • Hamstrings
  • Glutes

But they also strengthen:

  • Core muscles
  • Ankles and joints
  • Lower back
  • Spine stability

He also noted that since squats recreate the natural actions such as sitting and standing, they are a very practical exercise and useful when it comes to long-term fitness.

3. Overhead Press

Overhead press is regarded as a shoulder exercise; however, when done standing up, it becomes a strong full-body exercise. Overhead presses are not only movements of the  shoulders. They make use of your legs, abdomen, and buttocks to make the weights when you press them over your head when standing up. Muscles worked include:

  • Shoulders
  • Triceps
  • Core
  • Glutes
  • Legs for stability

Benefits of Compound Exercises

Compound exercises involves training the body as a whole, as opposed to training separate muscles. According to Varnit, a few benefits include:

  • Better muscle coordination
  • Increased calorie burn
  • Improved strength
  • Time-efficient workouts
  • Improvement in functional fitness

How Often Should You Do These Exercises?

Varnit suggested performing these exercises two to three times per week with proper rest between sessions. Beginners should:

  • Start with lighter weights
  • Focus on correct form
  • Increase weight gradually
  • Warm up before training

Bottomline

Deadlifts, squats and overhead presses are the three most effective compound exercises that can successfully train all the major muscle groups. However, proper form is paramount, so it's wise to consult a trainer or experienced lifter before adding them to your routine.
