Should You Exercise With Makeup On? Expert Shares Insights

Over time, exercise has been lauded for the benefits it provides for our skin health. It not only gets your blood pumping, delivering essential nutrients and oxygen to your skin cells, but also helps flush out waste products, potentially giving you a clearer complexion. While all that is well and good, a common concern among beauty enthusiasts is whether it is alright to exercise with their makeup on. Is it safe to have a full face of foundation and concealer with all that sweat dripping down during your exercise session? Because we understand your concern, we asked an expert to shed light on it.

Benefits Of Exercising For Skin Health

“When you engage in regular physical activity, you're not just strengthening your heart and managing weight; you're also nourishing your skin from within,” Cosmetologist Ritu Khariyan at Skinlogics tells the team at OnlyMyHealth.

According to her, one of the primary benefits of exercising for the skin is the increase in blood flow and lymph flow, which deliver essential nutrients and oxygen to skin cells, promoting a radiant and glowing complexion.

Moreover, the improved blood flow aids in the removal of toxins, preventing clogged pores and breakouts, she adds.

It is also important to note that regular exercise boosts collagen production, a key protein responsible for the skin's structure and firmness. It aids in repairing damaged skin cells, accelerating wound healing, and reducing the signs of ageing such as wrinkles and fine lines.

‘Avoid Makeup While Exercising’

When asked whether or not people should wear makeup while exercising, Khariyan recommends against it.

She says, “Makeup can block pores and hinder the skin's ability to breathe and regulate temperature during physical activity. Blocked pores can lead to acne and other skin issues, compromising your skin's health in the long run.”

A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology also found that makeup increases sebum production, which leads to the development of oily, greasy skin. As per the researchers, it also reduced overall oil levels on the skin with makeup, which indicated that wearing foundation while exercising might dry and clog pores, especially for people with dry skin.

In general, wearing makeup for long hours without proper removal can clog pores, cause irritation, and contribute to premature ageing, according to Khariyan.

“Choosing the right makeup for your skin type, following a thorough skincare routine, and ensuring proper makeup removal are essential steps in maintaining healthy skin while using makeup,” she advises.

Skincare Products To Use During Exercise

When it comes to skincare products for exercising, it's crucial to prioritise protection and hydration, says Khariyan.

Before starting your workout, she recommends applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to shield one’s skin from harmful Ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Cleansing your face with a mild cleanser during exercise helps remove sweat and dirt, preventing pore blockages and acne.

Additionally, using a gentle moisturiser as needed keeps your skin hydrated and supple, even during intense physical activity.

It is important to note that our skin is extremely delicate and sensitive, which is why it's important to approach it with care, especially in terms of makeup usage and skincare products.

“By prioritising skin protection, hydration, and proper cleansing, you can enjoy the transformative effects of exercise on your skin while minimising any potential negative impacts,” Khariyan concludes.
