‘Drag Race’ Star DeJa Skye Nearly Died After Tummy Tuck: How Much Weight Can You Really Lose From Liposuction Surgery?

Surgeries gone wrong can leave lasting regret, especially when the risks outweigh the results. Many people hope for a fresh start or a new look, but sometimes the journey takes a dangerous turn. This is exactly what happened to ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ star DeJa Skye, who is now speaking out about her traumatic experience. During the two-episode Season 10 premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars on Friday, the 34-year-old drag queen revealed how weight loss surgery in 2023 nearly cost her her life.

On the show, DeJa Skye opened up about her decision to get liposuction and a tummy tuck in Mexico. She shared, “It wasn’t a very good experience, if I’m being honest. My body was like, ‘No.’ It was crazy, like, I legit almost died.” She described the aftermath as “the darkest time, just sitting in the hospital bed alone and being like, ‘Why did I do this to myself?’”

DeJa explained that after surgery, her skin turned yellow and she needed three blood transfusions. Back in the U.S., she was hospitalised again with blood clots in her lungs and legs, which made it hard to walk. She also suffered severe vomiting, pain, and mental health struggles. “Recovery is a very slow process, and I didn’t think about that… If I knew it was going to be like this, I would have never gotten the surgery,” she admitted.

Dr Rajat Gupta, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Delhi, explains, “Contrary to what many people believe, liposuction is not an effective way to lose weight.” He further explains that it is designed for body contouring and targets stubborn fat that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise. The best candidates are people who are already near their ideal weight and want to refine their shape. The amount of weight lost after liposuction is only as much as the fat removed, nothing more. He also stresses that liposuction does not treat obesity or prevent future weight gain.

Many people think liposuction is a quick fix for weight loss, but that’s not true. Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure meant to remove stubborn fat from certain areas of the body, not a way to lose a lot of weight. The main goal is to improve body shape and contour, not to lower your overall weight. After liposuction, people usually lose only a few pounds, depending on how much fat is removed. The results are most visible in how the body looks, not in big changes on the scale.

Research and medical guidelines agree that liposuction is not a solution for obesity or major weight loss. According to a study, liposuction is best for people who are already close to their ideal weight but have pockets of fat that don’t go away with diet and exercise. The average amount of fat removed during liposuction is about two to five litres, which usually equals a few kilos at most. For those who need to lose a lot of weight or have health problems related to obesity, weight loss surgery (like bariatric surgery) is a better option.

Conclusion

DeJa Skye’s experience is a reminder that all surgeries, even cosmetic ones, have risks. Liposuction can help improve body shape, but it is not a magic solution for weight loss. If you are thinking about surgery, talk to your doctor, understand the risks, and have realistic expectations about the results.
