When couples start trying for a baby, they often turn to every bit of advice out there. From eating fertility-boosting foods to tracking basal body temperature, and even experimenting with different sex positions. The internet is full of myths claiming that certain positions can “guarantee” conception or make sperm reach the egg faster. It’s easy to see why people believe it, especially when the process of trying to conceive feels both exciting and stressful. But is there actually any truth to the idea that one position increases your pregnancy chances?
To separate facts from myths, we spoke with Dr Renuka Borisa, Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Navi Mumbai, who clears up the confusion.

Many people believe that gravity helps sperm travel to the cervix, but Dr Borisa clarifies that this is largely a myth. “Positions that allow closer contact between semen and cervix may aid sperm passage, but sperm movement primarily depends on their motility, not the position,” she says. The key is that sperm quickly swim through the female reproductive tract, making position a minor factor.
She clarifies:
- The idea that one position locks in a baby is not supported by strong evidence.
- What matters more is ensuring sperm meets the egg at the right time.
- Some positions might feel better or encourage intimacy, but they don’t guarantee conception.

Should You Lie Down After Sex to Increase Pregnancy Chances?![Lie Down After Sex to Increase Pregnancy Lie Down After Sex to Increase Pregnancy]()
The common advice to lie down after sex to help conception is not strongly supported by scientific evidence. Dr Borisa says, “Resting for 10 to 15 minutes with hips elevated may slightly increase sperm retention near the cervix, but standing or getting up soon after won’t harm your chances.” The focus remains on regular intercourse within the fertile period.
She suggests:
- If you find it comfortable, lying down for 10-15 minutes with your hips slightly elevated (e.g., a pillow) might help.
- But don’t get fixated: going about normal activity after that is fine.
- The big factors remain: timing, sperm health, egg quality, and avoiding stress.

How Long Should You Stay in Bed After Sex?![]()
- Experts recommend resting for about 10 to 15 minutes post-intercourse with hips raised.
- Beyond that, there’s no need for prolonged inactivity.
- Consistent timing during the ovulation window and healthy reproductive function matter most.
A study published by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine concluded that timing intercourse around ovulation had a far greater impact on pregnancy rates than sex positions or frequency. Sperm mobility and the body’s natural processes overshadow positional effects to fertilise the egg successfully.
What Other Factors Influence Your Chance of Conception?![]()
Dr Borisa emphasises the broader picture:
- Have intercourse regularly during the fertile window (roughly 5 days before ovulation + the day of ovulation).
- Maintain sperm health: avoid smoking, excessive alcohol, and drug use; keep a healthy weight and good lifestyle.
- Monitor female fertility signs: ovulation kits, cervical mucus changes, and basal body temperature.
- Speak to a fertility specialist if you’ve been trying for 12 months (or 6 months if you’re over 35).
“Rather than stressing over the exact sex position, couples should work on a relaxed, connected sexual experience and optimal reproductive health,” says Dr Borisa.

Conclusion
Sex position does not significantly affect pregnancy chances. What truly matters is timing intercourse during the fertile window and maintaining good reproductive health. As Dr Renuka Borisa advises, couples should focus on comfortable, stress-free intimacy and regular sex during fertile days rather than worrying about position or after-sex rituals. This approach supports a healthier, happier path to conception.
