Wet Hair Can Make You Sick: Doctor Says It’s A Myth

Time and again, our elders have warned us against going out or sleeping with wet hair. The common concern is that we might get sick. But is this true? Can you get sick if you step out with wet hair? In an interaction with the OnlyMyHealth team, Dr Brunda, Consultant, Internal Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, said that it is a common misconception and that there is no evidence to support the claim. Here are the facts to believe.

What Causes Viral Infections Like Cold And The Flu?

Colds and the flu are caused by viruses, which are spread through contact with infected people or surfaces, not by cold temperatures or wet hair, said Dr Brunda. Some of the common ways a virus spreads include:

  • Air droplets suspended by someone who is sick through coughs, sneezes, or while talking
  • Close contact with someone who has a cold, such as shaking hands, hugging, or kissing.
  • Sharing objects with the virus on them

How To Prevent Catching An Infection This Winter?

To minimise the risk of catching a cold or a flu infection during seasonal changes, here are some expert-recommended tips to follow:

  • Dress appropriately for the weather and ensure your living and work spaces are well-ventilated, as viruses develop in damp and closed spaces
  • Practise proper hand hygiene by washing them frequently, avoiding touching your face quite often, and using hand sanitizers
  • Maintain a safe distance from infected people
  • Follow a balanced diet
  • Stay hydrated to boost your immune system
  • Exercise for at least 30 minutes a day regularly
  • Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep
  • Consider getting a flu shot for additional protection

Reasons Why You Should Actually Dry Your Hair After Washing

While wet hair may not give you a cold or the flu, it can make you feel colder, causing discomfort, scalp irritation, and hair damage, said Dr Brunda.

According to a study published in the International Journal of Women's Dermatology, excessive grooming, such as combing and brushing, especially on wet hair, may lead to hair breakage. "Wet combing applies force to the hair close to the scalp, making it more damaging than dry combing, in which the force is placed on the end of the hair shaft," the study said.

Additionally, wet hair can promote the growth of fungus and bacteria, which can lead to skin conditions such as seborrhoeic dermatitis, according to StatsPearls Publishing.

Here are some of the measures you can take:

  • Blow-dry your hair before going outside, especially if it's cold or windy
  • If you have to go out with wet hair, cover your head and ears with headgear like a hat or scarf to prevent exposure to chill weather
  • Avoid combing hair while it is wet and use a soft bristle hair brush
  • Consult your doctor and use a leave-in conditioner or hair oil to help protect your hair from damage during the winter

Conclusion

Going out with wet hair does not make you sick. Cold and flu infections occur due to viruses and are mainly transmitted through close contact with an infected person. However, stepping out or sleeping with wet hair may cause other issues, such as hair breakage and damage, which is why drying your hair is crucial.
