When a person catches a common cold, symptoms start to appear gradually. This includes a sore throat, a runny nose, fever, and the buildup of mucus in the nose and throat. Many of us may have witnessed our elders (or even tried ourselves) throwing out or spitting the accumulated mucus for relief. But does clearing mucus discharge from the throat and nose really speed up cold recovery? We asked an expert to find out.

Why Does Mucus Build Up During A Cold?
Dr Dilip Gude, Senior Consultant Physician, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, described mucus as the body's natural defence mechanism to trap viruses, bacteria, and dust to prevent deeper lung infection. He said that the mucus keeps the airways moist, preventing irritation, and contains antibodies and enzymes to fight infections.
"During a cold, excess mucus is produced as a response to viral inflammation, leading to congestion and postnasal drip," he added.
Should You Spit Out The Mucus For Quicker Recovery?
While there is no scientific evidence to suggest that spitting out mucus during a cold has any benefits, it is said to clear airways and does not cause any harm.
However, it is important to note that swallowing mucus is not harmful either or does not make a cold worse, according to Dr Gude.
"Mucus is produced by the respiratory system to trap viruses, bacteria, and allergens, preventing them from spreading further. When swallowed, mucus enters the stomach, where gastric acids neutralise the pathogens. Spitting it out does not necessarily speed up recovery, but staying hydrated and clearing congestion can help manage symptoms," the doctor shared.
How To Clear Up Mucus Faster?
Some foods and drinks can help thin mucus and clear congestion, according to Dr Gude. These include:
- Warm fluids like herbal teas, broth, and warm water with honey
- Spicy foods like pepper, ginger, and garlic, which may help break down thick mucus
- Pineapple, as it contains bromelain, an enzyme that reduces mucus
- Steamy soups to help soothe the throat and open nasal passages
- Avoiding dairy if it worsens mucus production in some individuals.
Understanding The Colour And Consistency Of Mucus
The colour and the consistency of the mucus can reveal a lot about your health. Here’s a breakdown:
- Clear mucus—normal during a cold or allergies.
- White mucus—Indicates nasal congestion and mild inflammation.
- Yellow/green mucus—suggests an immune response; not always a bacterial infection.
- Thick, persistent green mucus with fever—may indicate a bacterial infection requiring medical attention.
- Brown or bloody mucus—could be due to irritation, dry air, or a more serious condition.
Conclusion
Mucus discharge is a common response of the body during a cold. Although spitting it out helps clear airways and provides relief, swallowing mucus does not necessarily cause harm. It is always important to take proper rest during illness, and staying hydrated is key. You can drink warm water or herbal teas to manage symptoms. Consult a doctor if the condition worsens or the symptoms do not improve.
