Can Weather Change Make You Sick? Expert Shares Tips To Stay Safe

There is suddenly a rise in colds, flu and fever all around us. Some of us are sick, while others are recovering from the flu. If you are wondering why we are susceptible to falling sick every time there’s a transition in the weather, especially before the onset of winter, then this article is for you. Today, we will try and understand why our health gets affected amid weather change.

To get a better understanding of this, we spoke to our experts - Dr Kirtiman Mandal, MBBS, MD Internal Medicine, Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER) and SSKM Hospital, Kolkata, and Dr Prathik Hegde, Consultant Orthopedic - Sports, Arthroscopy and Replacement Surgeon, Bangalore Hospitals.

How Weather Change Affects Health

Weather plays a significant role in our physical and mental well-being. “Sudden changes in temperature, humidity, and air pressure can stress the body, making it more susceptible to illness. Cold weather can weaken the immune system and worsen respiratory conditions such as asthma or bronchitis, while hot and humid weather may lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, or skin issues. Additionally, gloomy or rainy days can influence mood and energy levels, sometimes contributing to seasonal affective disorder (SAD),” explains Dr Hegde.

Dr Mandal shares that air pollution and pollen levels often increase during seasonal changes; and especially during winter, the cold dry air becomes stagnant in the lower atmosphere, worsening respiratory issues and allergic symptoms.

Why Weather Change Affects Sinus

Most of us struggle with sinus issues during weather change. Before understanding why this happens, let us tell you what sinus is. The sinuses are made of cavities within the facial bones and skull. These cavities are lined by mucous membranes linked to the nasal passages. Sinuses are best known for producing mucus.

“When the weather shifts, especially with drops in temperature or humidity, sinus membranes can become irritated or inflamed. Cold air causes the nasal passages to dry out, while humid or rainy conditions may increase congestion. Additionally, changes in air pressure can affect sinus pressure, leading to headaches or facial pain. People with allergies or sinusitis are particularly sensitive to these variations,” says Dr Hegde.

Common Health Issues Caused by Weather Change

Dr Hegde shares with us some of the common health issues triggered by weather change. Let’s take a look at them:

  • Cold and flu due to weakened immunity and increased virus transmission.
  • Seasonal allergies triggered by pollen or dust changes.
  • Asthma and respiratory issues from temperature shifts or poor air quality.
  • Joint pain and arthritis flare-ups linked to barometric pressure changes.
  • Skin problems such as dryness or eczema in cold weather, or fungal infections in humid conditions.

Tips to Prevent Weather Change Illnesses

Though sometimes it seems like falling prey to seasonal flu is inevitable, one can always try to protect themselves. Dr Hegde shares some tips one can follow to safeguard themselves from illnesses triggered by the changing weather:

  • Dress appropriately: Layer clothing to adapt easily to fluctuating temperatures.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water even in cooler weather to support body functions.
  • Maintain good hygiene: Wash hands frequently to reduce the spread of seasonal viruses.
  • Avoid sudden exposure: Move gradually between hot and cold environments to help your body adjust.
  • Eat a balanced diet: Include fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins and antioxidants.

Tips to Boost Immunity Amid Changing Weather

Dr Hegde further shares how one can work towards boosting their immunity during weather change:

  • Get adequate sleep: Rest strengthens your immune response.
  • Exercise regularly: Moderate activity enhances circulation and overall resistance to infections.
  • Include immune-boosting foods: Citrus fruits, ginger, turmeric, garlic, and yogurt help fortify immunity.
  • Take Vitamin D: Especially during the cooler months with limited sunlight exposure.
  • Reduce stress: Chronic stress can lower immunity—practice mindfulness, meditation, or deep breathing.

Dr Mandal suggested that one can add probiotics and prebiotics into their diet, such as yogurt, fermented foods like kimchi or supplements that may help maintain gut-brain axis. “This will help keep the immune system in balance, preventing autoimmune diseases. Also, you can take annual influenza vaccines just before the winter. Pneumococcal vaccines are recommended for elderly individuals.”
