Diwali 2024 Pregnancy Guide: Essential Tips for a Safer and Healthier Celebration

Diwali is a time filled with joy, light, and togetherness, but when you’re expecting, it’s essential to approach the celebrations with a bit of extra care. The bright lights, festive sounds, and delicious treats make Diwali a cherished time, yet the hustle and excitement can feel more intense during pregnancy. With a few mindful adjustments, you can immerse in the joy of Diwali while keeping your health and your baby’s well-being a priority. We spoke to Dr Gandhali Deorukhkar, Consultant - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, who shared a quick guide to help you ensure a safer, healthier, and equally festive Diwali this year!

Essential Tips for Pregnant Women For a Safer and Healthier Diwali Celebration

1. Limit Exposure to Loud Noises

"The firecrackers and celebrations can get noisy. Prolonged exposure to loud sounds can increase stress and may affect the baby. If you can, choose quieter celebrations or wear earplugs when necessary, especially near large gatherings," said Dr Deorukhkar.

According to a 2020 study, during pregnancy, sound travels from the air, passing through the abdominal wall and the uterus, then reaching the amniotic fluid and the foetus’ head. Noise stimulates the inner ear via soft tissue transmission. The developing cochlea in a foetus is especially sensitive to ototraumatic factors compared to that of adults, which means noise exposure can impact foetal hearing by damaging the internal and external hair cells in the cochlea.

2. Avoid Smoke and Pollutants

Air pollution from firecrackers can exacerbate respiratory issues and impact the baby’s health. According to a 2023 study, Air pollution can indirectly affect lung development by contributing to low birth weight, premature birth, or weakened immune system development. These health effects are particularly significant, as prenatal exposure to air pollution can disrupt organ development and organogenesis.

"Hence, stay indoors when possible, especially in the evening when pollution peaks. Consider using air purifiers to improve indoor air quality, and avoid areas with dense smoke or fumes," added Dr Deorukhkar.

3. Dress Comfortably and Safely

You should choose loose-fitting, breathable fabrics to keep cool and comfortable. Opt for cotton or other natural fibres over synthetic materials to minimise the risk of overheating. Be cautious of tripping hazards with floor-length outfits, and avoid heavily embellished clothing that may feel heavy or restrictive.

4. Prioritise Healthy Eating

Diwali sweets and treats are tempting, but balance indulgence with nutritious options. Opt for sugar-free sweets if possible and keep hydrated to support both you and the baby. Moderation is key to managing blood sugar levels, especially for those with gestational diabetes. According to a 2021 study, Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is the most common condition among pregnant women, impacting up to 15–25% of pregnancies globally. India ranks as the country with the second-largest population affected by DM and stands as one of the central hubs of the global diabetes epidemic.

5. Rest Regularly

"Amid Diwali’s hustle and bustle, it's essential for expectant mothers to prioritise rest. Preparing for the festivities can be physically demanding, from decorating the home to participating in social gatherings, which can lead to fatigue more quickly during pregnancy," said Dr Deorukhkar.

Taking frequent breaks not only helps manage energy levels but also prevents strain on the body, which is essential for both mother and baby. Rest supports circulation, reduces swelling, and can alleviate common pregnancy discomforts, such as back pain and fatigue.
