What Is The Difference Between Body Lotion and Body Butter? Know What’s Better

Do you moisturize your body like you do your face? Many women do not follow only facial skincare routine and neglect body skincare while both are equally important. We know facial skin demands extra care but that doesn’t mean your body doesn’t require love and care. Do you know why your hands are dry or why your legs are flaky? That is because you are not moisturizing them well. The easy to grab product is a body lotion. We all have that in our dressing cabinet. Only a few put it to use daily. The second body care product is a body butter which is a newfound love of celebs and millennials. What is the difference between these two? Which is better? Let’s find out.

Body Lotion Vs. Body Butter

The body lotion was the only body skincare product until body butter was made. Both are great in terms of benefiting the skin then what’s the difference between the two? The difference lies in the formulation. Body lotions are usually light whereas body butter are thick and slightly heavy on the skin. Which one is good depends upon the user’s skin and its hydration needs.

Let’s talk about seasonal use. Since body lotions are light, these are good for summers where our skin sweats a lot. Lightweight formulas make it easy for the product to seep into the skin without clogging the pores. On the other hand, body butter is great for winter skincare to prevent dryness and keeping the skin hydrated even in cold windy weather.

Let’s get into the details.

The body lotion is lightweight than body butter

Body lotions generally have a runny consistency with a light formula. These get quickly absorbed by the skin without making the skin greasy. Most lotions have water, milk and oil which is good for dry and normal skin types. Being light, these are supremely hydrating. You can also mix sunscreen to it and apply it to your hands for dual benefits. Also, these can be used twice in a day.

Coming to body butters, these are thick and heavy on the skin as they contain shea butter, cocoa butter, etc.. Only if your skin is extremely dry, go for body butter. As the name suggests, butter means greasy and heavy. Body butter works well in winters to prevent dryness, flakiness and patchy skin. However, you can always use these on your legs, elbows which have rough skin.

Body lotions are refined while body butters are raw

One positive point about body butter is that these are organic with less oil or water content. This is one of the reasons why body butters are not used for the face. These have a thick consistency which may trigger acne and breakouts. The best time to use a body butter is the night before bed as it helps the skin repair overnight.

Body lotion doesn’t clog pores while body butter does

It is quite clear by now that body butters are heavy and greasy. If you use these on your face, it may clog the pores. Leave body butter for the body. In fact, do not use either of these on your face as both are ideal for the body only.

TIP: Use body lotion in the summer season and body butter in winter.
