We all think we know everything about food, but there are some glaring myths that we blindly believe in! Let's bust these myths by reading below
In times when we all understand the labels before buying anything to eat, it is extremely important to know it all about what to eat and what not! Despite the whole dependency on the Internet, there are some myths about certain useful items that we think are good for us. In the run to make wise choices in our diet, we end up making some glaring mistakes without knowing the good and the bad of specific foods. To help us understand better, Dietitian Srishti Arora helps us bust some myths that we have been following until now:
Bread, pasta, rice and potatoes are fattening
What we know is that all food high in carbs add to the bodyweight, which has led to the rise of several low-carb diets like the Atkins diet, etc. However, there has been no proof that foods high in carbs lead to weight gain. More than anything, the excess intake of calories is the primary reason for weight gain. It is how we treat carbs while cooking, which makes the whole difference. Like adding butter on bread, sauces in pasts and oil in potatoes are the primary culprits.
TIP: Go for wheat bread, brown rice and wheat pasts and refrain from adding fat to these. Instead of cheese, add tomatoes to a pasta dish and a hung curd dip on your bread, in place of butter.
Eating Late Night Can Lead To Weight Gain
Most of us think that binge eating at night is the reason for fat storage in the body. More than anything, skipping dinner can be a problem here. Eating a load full of calories in the daytime and nothing at night cannot help in weight loss. The goal should be to lose whatever calories you eat every day to lose weight.
TIP: Do not eat everything in the day time. Keep a specific calorie count for dinner as well. What stalls weight loss when you eat all the necessary calories for dinner in the day time. Eat well-defined proportionate meals.
Being Overweight Comes With Genes
Most of us blame our genes to be fat, but it is the lifestyle, which has a powerful impact on our body weight. It does have a specific impact, but nothing cannot be changed by following a strict and active lifestyle. Inheriting fat genes from parents can be true, but one has to carefully work towards losing the extra weight as per the body type.
TIP: Make conscious changes in your lifestyle to see the difference. Exercise regularly, eat well and do not sit idle. Keep moving for maximum productivity and energy for the day.
Dairy products are unhealthy
We often hear how people are intolerant to dairy products due to the presence of lactose in dairy. But, products like cheese, curd and milk are excellent sources of protein, zinc and calcium. Also, most of these dairy products now come in low-fat variants, making it a must for those losing weight too. Low-fat does not mean less of calcium but certainly less of fat.
TIP: For those on weight loss journey, go for low-fat dairy products over full-fat milk products and reduce the quantity to three servings a day of one glass of milk, a bowl of curd and a small cube of cheese.
