Coronavirus epidemic cases are increasing worldwide. However, it can be avoided by repeatedly washing hands with soap and wearing masks. Apart from this, coronavirus can enter the body through the eyes, nose and ears, in such a situation, everyone is being told not to touch the eyes, nose, ears with social distancing. People who wear contact lenses should start wearing glasses to avoid the coronavirus. Wearing eyeglasses can reduce the spread of the coronavirus. People can also get infected by coronavirus infection through nose and mouth, but by applying the lens, they will touch their eyes which will lead to the risk of infection of coronavirus. However, it is human nature to touch the face at least 20 times a day. So until the situation is under control, people should replace contact lenses with glasses.
Dr Ikeda Lal, an ophthalmologist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, tells us how we should take care of our eyes while wearing eyeglasses and contact lenses.
Eye problems
- Myopia: The image of an object is formed on the retina. In myopia, this image is formed in front of the retina (then blurring appears). For this, a lens of convex or minus number is given.
- Hypermetropia: When the image of an object is not formed on the retina (and behind it), it is called hypermetropia. This makes it difficult to see the nearest thing. Convex lenses with plus power are needed to overcome this problem.
- Astigmatism: This is a condition in which the cornea of the eye is not completely round. This causes the light on the retina to spread around rather than sticking to any one place. This may also cause a headache. Cylindrical lenses are used when such a problem occurs.
- Presbyopia: Usually after 40 years of age people have trouble seeing nearby things. Convex or plus number lens is used in glasses to overcome such a problem.

Contact lens selection
For those who have poor eyesight and who do not like to wear glasses, contact lenses are the right choice. If there is a problem of dryness in the eyes then a soft contact lens should be chosen. They are made of plastic. Along with being comfortable, they are also helpful in transporting oxygen to the cornea. Lack of this can cause inflammation in the cornea. Such lenses should be replaced after a month.
