The process was shared in a video by Juliane Marie Corona of Mommy Made Encapsulations on Instagram November 20. It shows the cord shaped into a heart, dehydrated, and coated in gold chrome. Juliane captioned it, "Where her journey began… became a keepsake she will cherish forever. The umbilical cord represents the very first bond between a mother and her child—the lifeline that nourished, safeguarded, and supported them throughout every moment of pregnancy." She called it an honor to create for Cardi, turning something significant into a treasured piece. Cardi herself hasn't posted directly yet, but fans love the sentimental twist on her motherhood milestone.

Is It Safe or Risky?

Both doctors agree the trend can be safe with strict hygiene, but warn of hidden dangers if done wrong. Dr Smrithi D Nayak explains, "Using a small, dried portion of the umbilical cord for keepsake jewellery can be safe only if it is thoroughly dried, disinfected, and handled correctly. However, the process does carry infection and contamination risks if the cord is not dried before preservation, it is handled with unclean tools or surfaces, moisture is trapped inside resin or jewellery settings, or fungal or bacterial growth begins before sealing."

She adds, "The raw umbilical stump is a biological tissue. If it is not processed with proper hygiene, it can harbour bacteria, especially Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, or mould." Dr. Nayak stresses waiting until the stump falls off naturally and the navel heals. Air-dry it fully on a sterile surface, then store airtight. For jewellery, use medical-grade resin and sterile tools.

Dr. Puneet Rana Arora echoes this: "Transforming umbilical cord tissue into jewelry can be safe only if the cord is completely dried, sterilized, and sealed. Improper preservation leaves organic material that can harbor bacteria or mold, creating infection risks." He recommends clean scissors at birth, breathable storage, and full drying before sending to pros. "Safe collection requires using clean scissors and clamps at birth, followed by storing the trimmed cord in a sterile, breathable container."

Steps for Safe Cord Preservation

Follow these expert tips to avoid issues:

  • Wait for the stump to detach naturally (1-3 weeks post-birth).
  • Place on a clean, dry surface to air-dry completely—no moisture left.
  • Use sterile tools; avoid bare hands.
  • Store in airtight containers away from humidity.
  • Choose artisans with hygiene protocols and quality resin.

Health Risks of Getting It Wrong

Improper handling spells trouble. Dr. Nayak notes, "Yes, improper handling of the cord can allow bacteria or fungi to grow, leading to odour, tissue decay, or mould." Dr. Arora agrees: "Contaminated material can cause odor, mold growth, or skin irritation." No long-term risks to mom or baby once detached, but the jewellery might degrade, leak, or smell over time.

Who should skip it? Dr. Nayak says families unsure about hygiene should consult doctors. Dr. Arora advises those with weak immunity or discomfort with bio-material to choose other mementos.

Why Parents Love This Trend

It's all about that emotional bond. Like Cardi, many see the cord as a pregnancy lifeline turned forever keepsake. But experts remind: sentiment is great, safety first.
