It was in 2014 when the 10-Step Korean Skincare Routine gained global popularity – thanks to platforms like TikTok and Instagram, which helped such viral beauty trends spread rapidly.
Now, in 2025, a new skincare trend called "Morning Shed" is taking over the internet, with influencers and skincare enthusiasts in the United States claiming it helped them achieve a refreshed, glowing look overnight.
But at OnlyMyHealth, we prioritise fact-checking before endorsing viral trends. To separate hype from fact, we spoke to Dr Bhargavi Uttmani, Consultant Dermatologist, Kaya Limited, Andheri East, Mumbai, to determine whether the ‘Morning Shed’ trend is truly effective and safe for your skin.

How Does The ‘Morning Shed’ Trend Work?
It is likely that the first question that strikes your mind is, What exactly is the "Morning Shed" trend? Answering the same, Dr Uttmani says, "The “Morning Shed” trend involves applying various overnight skincare and self-care products—such as sheet masks, under-eye patches, hydrating serums, occlusives, and even accessories like mouth tape or chin straps—before going to bed.
She adds that by morning, users “shed” or remove these layers to reveal rejuvenated, hydrated, and visibly refreshed skin."
According to the doctor, it’s actually a ritual that emphasises overnight transformation, and it's popular on platforms like TikTok for its satisfying glow-up aesthetic.
Is ‘Morning Shedding’ Effective And Safe?
“When done thoughtfully,” answers Dr Uttmani, adding that applying a hydrating serum, followed by a moisturiser and a light occlusive, can help lock in moisture overnight.
However, over-layering or mixing too many actives (like acids, retinoids, and masks) can backfire, causing clogged pores or skin sensitivity, she warns.
According to her, the goal should be balanced hydration, not product overload.
It is important to consider that there is only partial evidence behind the effectiveness of the trend. In general, the skin naturally repairs itself overnight, and ingredients like retinol, peptides, and hyaluronic acid can support this regeneration. Hydrating masks and occlusives can also prevent water loss.
“However, using too many products or tools at once without understanding their compatibility may overwhelm the skin, leading to irritation or breakouts. While the ritual may feel rejuvenating, moderation and skin-type suitability are key for actual skin health,” the doctor reiterated.

Understanding Potential Risks Of TikTok’s ‘Morning Shed’ Trend
Any type of skincare routine can backfire, even if it may work for many. The same goes for this viral TikTok trend.
One of the common concerns with this ‘morning shed’ trend is that it requires layering with various skincare products, including sheet masks. According to Dr Uttmani, sheet masks are typically designed for 15–20 minutes, and therefore, leaving them on overnight can dry out your skin as the sheet begins to reabsorb moisture.
Additionally, occlusives like petroleum jelly can trap dirt or bacteria if applied on unclean skin. Therefore, prolonged or improper use of such products may lead to breakouts, milia, or barrier damage, especially for sensitive skin types.
Chin Straps, Jaw Bras, And Mouth Taping: How Safe And Effective?
Another aspect involved in this viral beauty and skincare trend is using tools like chin straps and mouth tapes for a strengthened jawline and proper nasal breathing, respectively.
Research on mouth taping has suggested that mouth-taping during sleep significantly reduced apnoea (47%) and snoring (50%), improving oxygen levels. Benefits were greater in those with more severe symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
“These tools might create temporary lifting effects by redistributing fluid or offering mild compression. But current evidence doesn’t support long-term sculpting or tightening from such gadgets alone,” Dr Uttmani notes.
For more noticeable and lasting results, dermatological treatments like radiofrequency, microneedling, or ultrasound therapy are more effective, she shares.
A Final Word: “Stick To Simple Solutions”
There is little to no evidence to support viral skincare trends, which is why Dr Uttmani recommends sticking to simple yet consistent regimens. These include:
- Cleanse your face to remove dirt and makeup.
- Apply a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid.
- Use a targeted treatment (like retinol, niacinamide, or peptides).
- Lock it in with a moisturiser appropriate for your skin type.
- Optionally, use an overnight mask once or twice a week.
The expert concludes by advising to avoid overcomplicating one’s routine and never skipping sunscreen in the morning, as it protects the gains made overnight.
