Internet Claims Toilet Paper Can Cause Yeast Infection: Is This True?

Over the years, toilet paper has gone from being a luxury item to a basic household necessity for many people around the world. It signifies personal hygiene and comfort, especially in modern, fast-paced lifestyles where convenience and cleanliness are paramount.

However, there are claims circulating online that certain types of toilet paper may contribute to yeast infections, which contradicts the very purpose of toilet paper as a hygiene product. TikTok creator and sexual health educator Jeneka Jool recently shared her experience of spending a year making lifestyle changes to treat a yeast infection, only to discover that the brand of toilet paper she was using was the cause of her issues.

But how true is this claim? To find the answer, the OnlyMyHealth team connected with Dr Mahua Bhattacharya, Consultant Gynaecologist, Fortis Hospital, Anandapur. Here's what she had to say.

Can Toilet Papers Cause Yeast Infection?

A yeast infection generally occurs due to an overgrowth of candida or fungus in various areas of the body. It most commonly occurs in the vaginal area of women, leading to symptoms such as itching, burning, thick white discharge, redness, swelling, pain, or burning when urinating or during sex.

Coming to the question of whether or not toilet paper causes yeast infection, Dr Bhattacharya said, "Certain types of scented or dyed toilet paper may irritate sensitive skin, potentially disrupting the natural flora and pH balance of intimate areas. This disruption could create an environment favourable to yeast overgrowth, increasing the risk of infections."

She added, “Certain ingredients in toilet paper, such as fragrances, dyes, and harsh chemicals, may irritate sensitive skin and disrupt the natural balance of flora and pH in intimate areas. This irritation can increase the likelihood of yeast overgrowth.

A 2010 study published in the Official Publication of the College of Family Physicians of Cancer supported these claims, sharing a case study of a 51-year-old woman who experienced chronic vulvar irritation, itching, and discomfort for four years.

Despite using Over-The-Counter (OTC) antifungal medications, her symptoms persisted. After extensive medical testing, the underlying cause was identified as an allergic reaction to chemicals in bleached toilet paper. Researchers highlighted that the woman found relief by switching to unbleached toilet paper.

Therefore, it is crucial to choose unscented, dye-free, and hypoallergenic toilet paper, which may help prevent irritation, said Dr Bhattacharya.

To reduce yeast infection risk related to toilet paper, individuals can use unscented, dye-free, or hypoallergenic toilet paper, recommended by Dr Bhattacharya.

Alternatively, soft, damp, unscented wipes or a bidet can be gentler on sensitive skin. These practices help maintain natural flora and pH balance, minimising irritation and potential yeast overgrowth.
