High blood pressure also known as ‘Silent Killer’ is a health condition affecting people worldwide. In this condition, the force of the blood gets extremely high, pushing against the artery walls. It eventually might cause health problems such as heart disease. It is common but it can be serious if not treated on time. People with high blood pressure don’t see any symptoms. The only way to know whether you have high blood pressure or not is to get it checked. It can be taken care of by making some changes in the lifestyle, like eating healthier, quitting tobacco, and increasing physical activity, although some people might still need to take medicines.
What Is Heat Stroke
"Heat stroke is considered a medical emergency as it is the most severe form of injury caused by heat. It usually occurs when the body temperature rises to 104 F (40 C) or above. This situation occurs when an individual is exposed to high temperatures or increased physical exertion in hot weather. This situation can be life-threatening for those who are suffering from high blood pressure. A combination of blood pressure and extreme heat puts the heart under stress which leads to heart attack. Understanding the link between the two health risks, especially in summer, to prevent the consequences of this combination on heart health," said Dr Brajesh Kumar Mishra, Intervention Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist, Manipal Hospital, Gurugram.

Rise in temperature leads to rise in heat stroke. This severe heat related illness can create a deadly combination with high blood pressure. Dehydration leads to the thickening of blood and a reduction in blood volume, which leads to the formation of clots and is a direct way to heart attack.
How to prevent heat stroke
Keep yourself hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your body cool.
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine: These lead to dehydration.
- Clothing: wear loose, lightweight, and light-colored clothing as it helps in keeping your body cool.
- Monitor blood pressure: Always keep a check on blood pressure, especially at the time of heat waves.
- Use cooling techniques: Take cool showers and use a wet towel or cooling pack to cool down your shoulder, neck, and head.
"High blood pressure leads to heat stroke which leads to an increase in the risk of heart attack. High BP puts strain on heart and blood vessels and heat stroke leads to dehydration and rise in body temperature. By understanding risks and taking necessary measures people can manage their health during summers. Heat stroke is a severe illness caused due to extreme heat; it can increase the risk of heart attack. It is important to take preventive measures like staying hydrated, avoiding peak heat hours, etc," said Dr Mishra.
