Looking at the sight of hair accumulating in your comb or falling every time you run your fingers through it can be upsetting. Most people opt for haircare products while some engage in regular hair trimming. Another significant approach that has been hovering over the market is the derma roller. But are these products effective, or just another fad? To answer your questions, we spoke to Dr Jangid, Dermatologist, Hair Transplant Surgeon and Founder, SkinQure Clinic, Saket, New Delhi, who explained if derma rollers can help with hair growth.
According to recent trends, 70% of men and 40% of women are dealing with alopecia. It is a condition which can lead to partial or complete hair loss.
What Is a Derma Roller?
A derma roller is a small handheld device consisting of tiny needles. “These needles create micro-punctures in the skin. It was originally developed for skincare, however, it is now used to address hair growth concerns. These tiny punctures improve blood circulation and boost collagen production, creating a healthier environment for hair follicles to grow, said Dr Jangid.
Another benefit of these products is that they can allow the medications to penetrate the skin barrier easily, thereby improving the medication effect.

How Does It Support Hair Growth?
Using a derma roller, also known as microneedling can help hair growth treatments like minoxidil work better by helping them absorb deeper into the scalp. “This is because the process allows the medications to penetrate the skin barrier easily. The tiny holes made by the derma roller help your body heal and can also stimulate hair growth by making your hair follicles stronger," added Dr Jangid.
According to a 2021 review, microneedling may be a better alternative to minoxidil for promoting hair growth. The study also stated that when microneedling and minoxidil were used together, it resulted in better efficacy.
Things to Keep in Mind
It is important to take necessary precautions to avoid any side effects while using derma rollers. Follow these tips shared by Dr Jangid:
- Avoid pressing too hard or using a derma roller too frequently as it may cause scalp irritation. In some cases, it may also lead to infections and scarring. Therefore, always follow usage guidelines.
- Hair growth is not a matter of one-day treatment. It is a natural process and may take several months. Therefore, patience is essential.
- People dealing with sensitive skin, scalp issues, or underlying health concerns should consult a dermatologist before trying a derma roller. Derma rolling can also spread active acne or warts from one body part to another. Hence, it is better to prioritise safety.
Is It Worth Trying?
A derma roller may help boost hair growth, however, it is not a guaranteed solution. The outcome will depend on the cause and intensity of your hair loss and how your body responds to treatment. If you want to try this treatment, consider integrating it into a broader hair care routine and use it responsibly to avoid potential side effects.
Bottomline
Dr Jangid concluded, “Derma rollers may be effective in hair growth but they cannot be considered as the universal solution. Therefore, you should speak to a hair care expert if dealing with hair loss. They can evaluate your situation and recommend a tailored treatment plan. Derma rollers can be a useful hair care tool if used correctly and combined with other treatments. However, seeking professional advice before starting is always a wise decision.”
