Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common form of kidney cancer, making up about 75–80% of cases. According to Dr Bharat Bhosale, Medical Oncologist, Bombay Hospital and Holy Spirit Hospital, Mumbai, most kidney cancers are this subtype, where the cancer cells look clear or pale under a microscope.
Stage 4 kidney cancer means the disease has spread beyond the kidney, often reaching organs like the lungs. At this advanced stage, treatment becomes much more difficult, and the chances of long-term survival drop sharply. While early-stage kidney cancers have a five-year survival rate of 70–90%, the rate for stage 4 drops to around 10–15%, according to a report published on PubMed.
Another study in the medical journal Translational Cancer Research found that patients with kidney cancer that spreads to the lungs have better chances if doctors can remove the lung tumours. In some cases, surgery can help people live longer, especially if the cancer has not spread too widely and the patient is otherwise healthy. However, treatment can be very challenging, and every patient’s journey is different.
