Blackheads: Ayurvedic Remedies To Remove It

Blackheads are the little spots that seem to appear out of nowhere, and can be a source of frustration for many. These tiny black or yellowish bumps, often found on the nose, chin, and forehead, are a type of acne that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells.

While there are numerous commercial products available to combat blackheads, Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of natural healing, offers a range of holistic and effective remedies to tackle them.

Blackheads in Ayurveda

“In Ayurveda, blackheads are often associated with an imbalance in the Kapha dosha, which governs elements of earth and water in the body. When Kapha is excessive, it can lead to an accumulation of sebum and dead skin cells in the pores, resulting in blackheads,” said Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar.

Ayurvedic remedies aim to balance the doshas and address the root causes of blackhead formation.

Ayurvedic Remedies for Blackhead Removal

Triphala Powder Scrub

“Triphala, a combination of three fruits (amalaki, bibhitaki, and haritaki), is a potent Ayurvedic remedy for blackheads. Mix a teaspoon of Triphala powder with water to create a paste and gently scrub it over the affected areas. Triphala helps exfoliate dead skin cells, unclog pores, and balance Kapha,” Dr Ganesh Chaudhary explained.

Turmeric and Sandalwood Mask

Turmeric is renowned for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties in Ayurveda. You can use turmeric powder with sandalwood powder and a little water to create a paste. Apply this mask to your blackhead-prone areas and let it dry before washing it off. This helps reduce inflammation and prevents blackhead formation.

Neem Oil

“Neem, known as the "wonder herb" in Ayurveda, is excellent for combating acne and blackheads. Apply a few drops of neem oil to the affected areas and leave it on overnight. Neem's antibacterial properties help cleanse the pores and prevent further blackheads,” said Dr Chaudhary.

Herbal Steam

Boil a pot of water and add Ayurvedic herbs like basil, rosemary, or neem leaves to it. Lean over the steaming pot with a towel draped over your head to trap the steam. This steam helps open up the pores and loosen blackheads, making them easier to remove.

Dietary Changes

In Ayurveda, diet plays a significant role in skin health. To balance Kapha, reduce your intake of oily, fried, and heavy foods. Opt for a diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Drinking warm water with a squeeze of lemon in the morning can also help detoxify your body.

Ayurvedic Cleansing

Regularly cleanse your face with herbal cleansers like aloe vera gel or rose water. These natural cleansers help remove excess oil and dirt from the skin without stripping it of its natural moisture.

In ayurveda there are methods to remove blackhead removal holistically, addressing both the visible symptoms and the interior imbalances that contribute to their production. You may naturally treat blackheads and have clearer, healthier skin by including these Ayurvedic remedies into your skincare routine and maintaining a balanced lifestyle.
