What Is The Average Height For Men In India And Worldwide?

Have you ever wondered what the average height of men in India is? If you are someone who is interested in this, then this article is for you. Today, we are going to discuss the average male height in India and in some international countries as well.

To get a better understanding on this topic, we get in touch with Dr Mahesh DM, Consultant – Endocrinology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore. Not only this, the expert also throws light on related topics like what factors influence men’s height, whether region makes a difference and so on. Keep reading.

Average Height of an Indian man

“The average height of an Indian man is around 5 feet 7 inches (170 cm). However, this can vary depending on the region, diet, lifestyle, and genetics. Men from northern states like Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh are often taller than those from southern or eastern states,” explains Dr Mahesh DM.

He adds that good nutrition during childhood, regular exercise, and access to healthcare – all these play an important role in growth and overall height. “In recent years, the average height of Indian men has increased slightly due to better living standards and awareness about healthy eating. Still, differences in income and food habits across the country mean that not everyone reaches the same average height. Overall, 5’7” is considered a healthy average for Indian men today,” he explains.

Medical Factors Impacting Men’s Heights

If you want to know what factors influence a man’s height, then our expert answers it for you. “A man’s height is mainly influenced by genetics, but several medical factors can also affect it. Hormonal imbalances, especially a lack of growth hormone, can slow or stop height development. Thyroid disorders and problems in the pituitary gland can also impact growth. Poor nutrition during childhood, especially lack of protein, vitamins, and minerals, can lead to stunted height.”

He adds that chronic illnesses such as kidney or liver disease and long-term use of certain medications like steroids may interfere with bone growth. “Bone or spine problems, such as scoliosis, can affect posture and make a person appear shorter. Good health, balanced diet, and proper medical care during growing years are important for reaching one’s natural height potential,” says Dr Mahesh DM.

Does Region Impact Men’s Heights?

India is a country known for its diversity. Similarly, heights of people in different states and regions vary too. How does men’s birth region affect their height? “Yes, the region where a person lives can make a difference in height. In India, for example, men from northern states like Punjab and Haryana are usually taller than those from southern or eastern states. This happens because of differences in genetics, food habits, lifestyle, and living conditions. People in regions with better nutrition, more protein-rich diets, and access to healthcare tend to grow taller,” says Dr Mahesh DM.

He further explains that climate also plays a role. “Colder regions often have taller people, while warmer areas may have shorter average heights. Socioeconomic factors such as income, sanitation, and healthcare access influence growth too. So, where a person is born and raised affects their overall nutrition and health, which together influence their height over time,” he cites.

Is India’s Average Height Declining?

“Yes, India’s average height has slightly declined in recent years, especially among younger generations. This is worrying because it reflects deeper nutrition and health issues. Factors like poor diet quality, iron and protein deficiency, and rising junk food consumption have affected growth in children,” explains Dr Mahesh DM.

The expert adds that factors like poverty, unequal access to healthcare, and early childhood malnutrition also play a big role. He mentions that in some cases, repeated infections and poor sanitation prevent the body from absorbing nutrients properly, leading to stunted growth.

“Lifestyle changes, less physical activity, and high stress can add to the problem. These issues show that while India is developing economically, better focus on child nutrition, maternal health, and hygiene is still needed to improve height and growth,” concludes Dr Mahesh DM.
