A Hip Fracture That Changed Everything
Arjun Kanungo’s fitness journey took a sudden turn in early 2023 during a vacation in the Maldives. What was supposed to be a relaxing trip turned into a nightmare when a freak accident left him with a fractured hip. The injury was severe, leaving Arjun bedridden and in unbearable pain. To make matters worse, an earlier kidney issue had forced him to adopt a vegan diet, which made recovery even more challenging.
In a video shared on social media, Arjun described the experience as the most difficult period of his life. His fractured hip rendered him unable to walk, sit, or even lie down comfortably. He recalled how doctors initially suggested surgery, which carried the risk of requiring additional surgeries in the future. However, Arjun was determined to avoid going under the knife.

Finding a Way to Heal Without Surgery
Despite being told that surgery was his best option, Arjun sought out alternative treatments. His search led him to physiotherapist Tamar from 206 Optimum Fitness in Mumbai. She assured him that recovery without surgery was possible but warned it would be painful and take time. Arjun, however, was ready to endure whatever it took to avoid surgery.
By mid-April 2023, just two months after the injury, he was able to walk again. However, the months of being bedridden and on a vegan diet had taken a toll on his body. Arjun had gained a significant amount of weight and was feeling uncomfortable with his new physique. He weighed 117 kg at his heaviest, a stark contrast to the lean and fit person he had been just months prior.

The Decision to Transform
Feeling disconnected from both his body and his music career, Arjun made a bold decision—he would not release any new music unless he got back into shape. This personal challenge pushed him to start working out again in June 2023. At that point, he weighed around 117 kg with 31% body fat, which put him in the obese category.
The weight gain affected more than just his physical appearance. Arjun admitted that he felt embarrassed and reluctant to appear in front of the camera. Despite having promised his fans a music tour, he cancelled it, choosing instead to focus on his health. By August 2023, he was determined to turn things around and get back into the best shape of his life.
A Grueling Fitness Regimen
Arjun’s weight loss journey wasn’t easy. Starting in June 2023, he gradually increased his physical activity by swimming, walking, and running in the pool to ease the pressure on his hip. By August, he was back in the gym, lifting weights and running again, thanks to the careful guidance of his trainers and physiotherapist.
From August 2023 to January 2024, Arjun managed to lose 10 kg, but he wasn’t satisfied. His ultimate goal was to achieve visible abs, and he set a deadline of September 2024 to make it happen. Sticking to a strict diet of salad and grilled chicken for 18 months, Arjun fought through cravings for burgers, ice cream, and other indulgences. He shared that he missed eating the “fun stuff,” but his determination kept him on track. In the final stages of his journey, Arjun’s body weight dropped to 90 kg, and his body fat percentage plummeted from 31% to 10%.

The Power of Veganism
Arjun’s experience with a vegan diet was a significant aspect of his journey. He adopted the diet to address his kidney issues, which had developed unexpectedly due to high protein intake. While veganism wasn’t easy for him, he credited it with helping him recover from his kidney problems. After six months on a vegan diet, his kidney function improved, and his blood markers returned to healthy levels.
Although he eventually returned to a non-vegan diet, Arjun acknowledged the positive impact that going vegan had on his health. He found that both veganism and his current diet had their merits and believed that each played a role in his recovery and weight loss journey.
